Why John Edwards' Sex Life is Our Business Toonew
It's precisely the gross and flagrant violation of our constitution and of our national values by seven dreadful years of the Bush administration that makes Edwards' betrayal of his supporters, his donors, his funders and -- potentially -- the greater interests of his country so disgusting. I voted for this guy, damnit, and I want my vote back!

John McCain's Birth Control Dodge Continuesnew
"I don't usually duck an issue, but I'll try to get back to you," McCain told a reporter in early July. The uncomfortable moments documented on video show the presumptive Republican nominee squirming and stammering when he was asked why he voted against a 2003 bill that would require private insurance companies to cover prescription birth control, just as they cover Viagra.

Politics needs a fix ... and here's where to startnew
both presidential candidates running so hard to pick up new voters to their cause that they risk alienating their original supporters; a swindler telling the FBI he allegedly raised thousands for a Tampa Bay politician with the explicit promise that the pol would vote for his zoning changes; a supervisor of elections who testified in a deposition that he really doesn't know a heck of a lot about how his office works.
Is there any wonder why voters aren't super-psyched for the primary?

John Edwards, the Gamblernew
When John Edwards finally confirmed that he had stepped out on his wife, initially I was disappointed, but not surprised. Power + overblown ego = misguided sense of invincibility & lack of caring for others. As for Elizabeth Edwards, I thought, Jesus, hasn't she been through enough.

Republicans, Democrats Trade Barbs Over Energy Independencenew
The war on terror. The war on drugs. Welfare reform. Family values. Remember those? Every single one was a signature issue of a general election campaign designed to distract the voting public from critical challenges facing the US. This year it's energy independence. Woo-hoo!

Election '08: The Confusion Campaignnew
As we approach the national political conventions, we all know this promises to be a mean season. Has America transcended its racist past? We're about to find out. Or are we? The landscape is already so littered with political detritus that it's hard to find a reliable vantage point from which to get a clear view of the world.

US Presidential Candidates Oversimplify the Georgia Crisisnew
Both Obama and McCain failed to take advantage of the crisis as an opportunity to comment on the complex nature of the territorial dispute in Georgia. Yes, we know that one of the first rules of campaigning is that messages should be kept simple, but we don’t have to like it. And when the subject matter is dicey foreign policy with potentially grave consequences, over-simplicity is dangerous business.

Man Up, Charlie Crist: Make Your Own Macho Would-Be Veep!new
It's crunch time in the Republican VP sweepstakes. If Florida Gov. Charlie Crist wants to win, he has to outrun the rumor he's light in the loafers. Getting engaged was a good start, but he needs an extreme makeover to be straight enough for the family-values crew.

When it Comes to Foreign Affairs, the Criminally Insane is the New Normalnew
Even a salamander should be able to see that the Iraq War hasn't done a damn thing for us, except terribly damage our prestige. Yet, remarkably, millions of people seem ready to vote to install a President John McCain, who is promising even more war.

A Political Prediction: Presidential Candidates Won't Do What Gore Asksnew

Al Gore recently made a speech calling for an energy makeover for the U.S., claiming that within 10 years, we can go to 100 percent renewable electricity. While I'm glad that someone has finally asked this country to get some courage regarding climate change, I'm highly skeptical of the political will for this to actually happen.

The victims of Jim David Adkisson -- two dead, eight wounded -- were the people targeted verbally by O'Reilly, Savage and Hannity as well as the other right-wing pundits in their rants and books. Hey, if I were a right-wing nut with an itchy trigger finger, I'd head over to a UU church myself.
