Police Arrest Occupy Houston Protestors for Using Rain Tarpnew

Police arrested 11 Occupy Houston protestors on Tuesday night for using a tarp to protect some electronic equipment from the rain, an apparent violation of the city's law prohibiting tents in city parks. During the arrest, protestors videotaped a officer refusing to give his badge number to another protestor.

How I Spent Election Night in a Baltimore Jailnew

Why was I, a 42-year-old husband and father of two young daughters, a senior employee of Johns Hopkins, a freelance journalist, and a law-abiding, civic-minded guy, sitting in my piss-soaked underwear in the back of a paddy wagon outside the Northern District police station?

Where's the Outrage Over Media Mistreatment at the RNC?new
Given the media's reputation for self-absorption, it's remarkable how little attention the press has paid to the crackdown on journalists during September’s Republican National Convention.

A Tale of Two Cities: The RNC You Saw and the One You Didn'tnew
There was carefully crafted show inside the Excel Energy Center, and a street-level populist protest in which hundreds were tear-gassed and arrested, including prominent journalists. In the arena, the nomination of Sarah Palin palpably energized the Republican delegates, but events away from the arena were more revealing.

Minneapolis Mayor to Arrested Journalists: Drop Deadnew
For a city leadership that spent so much time trying to convince everyone that the convention was in Minneapolis, too, Mayor R.T. Rybak's office suddenly wants very little to do with hosting the RNC, especially those nasty reports of police brutality and journalist arrests.

Dozens of Journalists Arrested at RNCnew

As McCain spoke Thursday night about America's obligation to confront "threats to peace and liberty in our time," armed agents were busy cuffing and detaining nearly 400 people a half-mile away. Most were protesters who had overstayed their permit -- many were journalists and bystanders. I was one of them.

RNC Protest Arrests: Minneapolis, Meet Beijingnew
Some of the dimmer and, frankly, underreported stories of the Beijing Olympics were those of the political dissidents and protesters who were arrested, detained and shipped away, far from the ostentatious opening ceremonies and cheering crowds. Three weeks later in America at the Republican National Convention, we are seeing a similar disassembling of civil liberties; and unlike the Chinese, we have a Constitution guaranteeing our rights.

Vermont Bill to Help Children of Incarcerated Parents Moves Forwardnew
Vermont currently has no mandatory training or statewide protocols that address how police deal with children at the time of a parent's arrest. But a new bill, one of four such pieces of pending legislation, would mandate a study of prevailing practices around the state.
