Preventing Another 9/11 Means the U.S. Must Reverse Coursenew
The notion that fighting terrorism overseas is the only way to prevent it from happening at home is worse than wrong -- it's the exact opposite

What's Next for the US and Pakistan Now That Musharraf is Gone?new
Seven years of backing Musharraf's military dictatorship turned Pakistan into the biggest threat to world peace today. No exaggeration. What's our plan now that the Perv is hitting the links? I'm not sure yet.

Political Bickering Could Start a New Cold Warnew
There is still no good reason to have a new Cold War, and I still think it won't happen. But as the politicians posture and the stupidities accumulate, I'm less sure than I was that it won't happen.

Bear-Baiting in Georgia: It's the Oil, Stupidnew
Not one American in ten could find Georgia on a map, but all of a sudden that country's "freedom-loving" government is of great importance to our national security. Bullshit. The situation in Georgia, pure and simple, is about access to oil and our contemptuous treatment of Russia in the post-communist era.

McCain's First War: He's Got Georgia on His Mindnew
Whether he actually encouraged this war, or is just wildly supporting the Georgian side of it, McCain seems to be playing with nuclear dynamite, poking and teasing the one country on earth that has the power to destroy the planet. This Cold War redux does more than give us a glimpse into what a McCain cowboy foreign policy would be like. It illuminates his insanity.

Foresight and Judgment Aren't John McCain's Strengthsnew
If the past is prologue, McCain's comments about the most important foreign policy decision of the Bush administration -- the Iraq invasion -- reveals how the Republican presidential nominee would respond to crises. Looking back at these statements, one thing's for sure -- McCain can't be accused of being psychic, well informed or diplomatic.

Why is the Bush Administration trying to provoke war with Russia?
John McCain, the U.S. and the Latest Russian Crisisnew
If Randy Scheunemann's Georgian connections provide even a scintilla of influence over a potential President McCain's decision on whether we go to war on that country's behalf, that is the very antithesis of democracy. But how many Americans are aware of any of this, as the news gulls continue regurgitating the myth of McCain as the strong and forthright policy expert?

The Georgian Debacle Could Break NATOnew
If the U.S. pursues its goal of bringing Georgia and Ukraine into NATO, there are only three options. If "old Europe" digs in its heels and refuses, then either the U.S. drops its demand, or NATO breaks up. The third alternative is that "old Europe" agrees to let the two former Soviet republics join -- but with the unspoken reservation that they will never actually go to war with Russia to protect them.

When it Comes to Foreign Affairs, the Criminally Insane is the New Normalnew
Even a salamander should be able to see that the Iraq War hasn't done a damn thing for us, except terribly damage our prestige. Yet, remarkably, millions of people seem ready to vote to install a President John McCain, who is promising even more war.

Obama's Idea of Swapping One Quagmire for Another is Hardly a Brilliant Foreign Policynew
If Barack Obama's idea of ending the occupation in Iraq is to transfer most of the troops to Afghanistan, he won't have accomplished much. He's right that we should not be in Iraq, but we also shouldn't be in Afghanistan.
