Forget Post-9/11, Get Ready for the Post-Obama Eranew
There have been generations of children who have bitterly told their parents -- and themselves -- that they had no real chance to make it, because they were black. I like to think that if Obama wins in November -- and maybe even if he doesn't -- that no little black kid will ever be able to say that with a straight face again.

America: The 'Oops' Nation
Prisoners at Guantánamo and possibly other American gulags, will now be allowed to demand their day in court. Since the government doesn't have evidence against them, legal experts say, most if not all of "the worst of the worst" will ultimately walk free. "Liberty and security can be reconciled," Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote for the majority.
In short: Oops.

Election '08: What We're Learning About Race, Age and Gendernew
How could it be that after a 2008 primary season that is historic in so many ways, that all of the racial, gender and age stereotypes and barriers that appeared to have been broken still remain issues going into the November general election and beyond?

For Obama to Win, He'll Have to Crib from Ronald Reagan's Playbooknew
Can a significant portion of the electorate abide Barack Obama as its next president? Right now, it's an open question. And for Obama to get the answer he wants, he's going to have to be another Ronald Reagan or another Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Obama Has Two Chances to Win, One More Far-Fetched Than the Othernew
He might enlarge his impressive work in the Rocky Mountain states and move four or five of them out of the Republican column to join the fixed big-state Democratic electoral base, or else he can subdue the prejudices of white rural voters across the South and upper Midwest and persuade them to vote their pocketbooks. Even to an old denizen of the Jim Crow South the second looks like the better prospect.

Is al-Qaeda Near Defeat?new
If it is, no one has yet informed its A/V department. In the past year, Osama bin Laden and his loyal cavemate Ayman al-Zawahiri (the Smithers of jihadi terrorism) have swamped my al-Netfliqs queue with at least 19 audio and video missives between them.

As He Eyes VP Slot, Sen. Jim Webb Presents a New Version of Himselfnew

It certainly hasn't escaped our notice that Webb has undergone a bit of a personality transfer as of late, and seems to be mellowing into a slightly-less-combative, slightly-more-effective version of the tough-talking SOB that we've come to know and ... well, maybe not love, but at least regard with brotherly affection.

Why the Fuss Over a Dying 76-year-old Senator?new
Pardon the following lapse of manners, for it's rather unseemly to write or speak critically of the terminally ill, but the outpouring of media and political grief following Senator Ted Kennedy's diagnosis of brain cancer has me in a real stew.

John McCain and the Doomsday Mobnew
With the primary contest behind him, McCain is now gearing up to run against "hope" and "change." In this broader race, lunatic pastors like John Hagee and Rod Parsley become extremely burdensome liabilities. So -- wink wink -- they get cut loose, at least for the next few months until they're needed again.
