Advertisers Don't Trust Online Ad Measurementnew

A new study released by the Audit Bureau of Circulations and NSON Opinion Research says few advertisers have confidence that their online ad impressions are measured and reported accurately, according to E&P. Ninety-one percent of the 270 online ad professionals surveyed said it's important to audit ad impressions and 89 percent want to see the verification of online traffic. In addition, 83 percent of survey respondents plan to increase online ad spending in 2007, and more than half expect double-digit budget increases. The survey also found that younger respondents were more trusting than older ones. Seventy-five percent of those under 25 said they trust metrics provided by online publishers, compared to only 22 percent of those between 55-64.

Opinion: 'Most Popular' Lists Benefit Readers, Writers and Newspapersnew

"A little module designed to generate page views by appealing to our voyeurism turns out to be the solution for one of online journalism's more-vexing problems," says Jason Fry of the Wall Street Journal. Fry argues that by incorporating the "Most Popular," and, to a lesser extent, the "Most E-mailed" functions into their Web sites, newspapers are regaining one of the greatest characteristics of the print product -- serendipity.

Mermigas: Newspapers Require 'Complete Makeover' to Adapt to Webnew

Diane Mermigas says that a consensus has been reached among media executives that newspapers "must undergo the costly process of dismantling and replacing legacy operations and business models with those completely new and untried." Although she acknowledges how terribly difficult it will be, the Hollywood Reporter columnist argues that the transition will require "not just a comprehensive understanding but an acceptance of and quick response to digital consumers' sophisticated curiosity, use of and interest in devices, platforms, content and transaction options. That alone will provide the foundation for constructing new, productive business models online."

Expert: Social Media "Search Engines" Deserve Publishers' Attentionnew

User-driven social content sites like Digg and Reddit are becoming "traffic powerhouses you can't ignore," says search-marketing expert Danny Sullivan. In fact, their rise has given birth to a new discipline that Web publishers now must learn to master: Social media optimization. Sullivan argues that the social content sites, although they are not traditional search engines, are now more important in terms of driving traffic than non-Google search engines like Yahoo!

L.A. Times Shifts Focus, Combines Print and Web Operationsnew

According to a report in the Times, newly installed editor James O'Shea underscored the importance of creating "savvy multimedia journalists" in a gathering of employees yesterday, where he announced the creation of a new position, editor for innovation, and the launch of crash-course "Internet 101" training for editors, reporters and photographers. Nevertheless, O'Shea emphasized that gains in online advertising dollars haven't been enough to offset the loss of print revenues: "For every $2 we lost, we are recouping only about $1." Presently, the Times' Web operation has 18 employees, compared to the Washington Post's 200, and 50 at the New York Times.

Cellular Companies Rolling Out Advertising on Mobile Phonesnew

Cingular, Sprint, and Verizon -- along with smaller companies such as Virgin Mobile USA and Amp'd Mobile -- are rewarding customers for viewing cellphone ads by offering lower rates, free content and multimedia services, according to the New York Times. Although mobile advertising doesn't generate much revenue yet, it may be too early to tell whether cellular carriers' new overtures will bear fruit. "Big advertisers generally want to see further adoption of services before they pour significant money into mobile ads," reports the Times.
