New York -- July 18, 2008 -- A quartet of publishing industry leaders, including George Lois, Luke Hayman, Jamie Hooper, and David Blum, have been tapped to lead a major re-launch and redesign of
02138, the luxury lifestyle magazine for Harvard alumni.
Manhattan Media, which publishes
AVENUE,
New York Family, and several weekly and monthly newspapers, acquired the bi-monthly
02138 from Atlantic Media and co-founders Bom Kim and Daniel Loss in May 2008.
Aiming to sharpen its editorial coverage and enhance its appeal to Harvard alumni, the company has recruited some of the biggest names in the publishing world, including Luke Hayman, who will oversee the redesign of the magazine, and the legendary George Lois, who will create the cover for the winter 2008 re-launch issue showcasing the Harvard 100, the magazines annual ranking of the top 100 living alumni.
Lois was the creative force behind the pioneering
Esquire Magazine covers of the 1960s and early 1970s and is currently the subject of a retrospective exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art. Hayman has been responsible for many of the most noted magazine redesigns in recent years, including
TIME magazine and
The Advocate in 2007, and
New York magazine, which earned him a National Magazine Award for excellence in magazine design in 2006. He is a partner at Pentagram.
Leading the masthead at 02138 will be Jamie Hooper and David Blum, who will serve as publisher/CEO and editor-in-chief, respectively.
A publishing veteran with 18 years of experience, Jamie has held management positions at
The New Yorker,
Maxim,
Giant and
Modern Luxury. As the Group Publisher and one of the original employees of
Maxim, Hooper helped build one of the most successful publishing franchises of the last decade. He left
Maxim in 2004 to create
GIANT magazine, which he sold in 2006.
Blum was, most recently, the editor-in-chief of the
New York Press. He began his career as a staff reporter for
The Wall Street Journal, and has been the editor-in-chief of
The Village Voice, a writer and editor at
The New York Times Magazine, and a contributing editor at
New York and
Esquire magazines.
"Our goal was to create a team on par with
02138s readers – smart, prestigious, influential, and not afraid to rock the boat," said Tom Allon, president and CEO of Manhattan Media. "George, Luke, Jamie, and David share our vision for making
02138 a must-read of the Harvard alumni who are shaping the future of politics, business, the arts, and so much more."
Blum will be succeeded at
New York Press by Jerry Portwood, who was previously managing editor of the newspaper. Prior to joining the newspaper in February 2006, Portwood was an editor and writer at the Atlanta alternative newsweekly,
Creative Loafing.
