Is the North Korea Nuclear Deal Unraveling?new
Last week, North Korea evicted international nuclear inspectors from its Yongbyon nuclear facility and removed the seals from its nuclear fuel processing equipment. And when I say seals, I don't mean seals in the adorable sea creature sense.

Another American Institution Fails, and We Lose Faith in Ourselvesnew

Obama Appeals to the Best Parts of Our National Psychenew
Obama's tremendous appeal, the second-graders in our neighborhood can tell you, is largely due to the symbolic power of his candidacy. It's not just about white and black. He raises the possibility that our nation could see itself in an entirely different light.

Will the '08 Election See an October Surprise?new
True, it's October Surprise time. But the truth is there have been only two major October Surprises in the past 52 years, in 1956 and 1962.

Thinking About Herbert Hoovernew

Comparing McCain to Hoover without appropriate historical context is about as penetrating as comparing him to Nero or Marie Antoinette, two other enduring symbols of coldhearted public servants.

John McCain and Friendsnew
While it may seem like he really doesn't know much about the economy, McCain knows who his real friends are. And considering the Republicans are planning on giving away all this money to those failed Wall Street lenders -- and nothing directly to help the people who are in trouble -- we can pretty well guess who those friends are.

John McCain's 'Old Boys' Network' is Well-Connectednew
On the campaign trail, McCain has been promising to take on the "old boys' network," first in Washington, and now on Wall Street. But as Obama countered, that would be like calling a "staff meeting" of McCain's campaign. Indeed.

Walking the Tricky Tightrope: How Can We Solve the Economic Crisis?

Forests are restored by fire, and so are markets. In a real market, I'd be inclined to say we should let it burn. What grows up to replace the old forest is always healthier. But thanks to greed and mismanagement, ours has clearly become a fake, faith-based market. So we're left to attempt to bring our economy in for a soft landing, hopefully enabling the kind of fresh start we need without endangering people's money.

The Sarah Swindle: Palin is Like a More Reckless Version of Dubyanew
Last week, I talked about the opportunism and cheap cynicism of choosing the woefully inexperienced and undereducated Alaska governor as vice president. That's all that was merited saying about Sarah Palin, I thought. Then I saw her interviewed by ABC's Charles Gibson, and was incredibly shocked and angry.
