Alt-Weekly Thr!ves Despite Competition from Gannett

Bingo and Sally Barnes bought Boise Weekly in August 2001, and the paper's business plummeted a few weeks later in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. By October of that year, when Gannett announced the launch of its Boise faux-alt, Thr!ve, the Barneses were petrified. But their fears were unfounded. After revamping the paper and forging closer ties with the community, they have soundly trounced the faux alt in the three-plus years since its debut.

Recycled Paper Eases Alt-Weekly's Eco Impact

Kevin McKinney, editor and publisher of Indianapolis's NUVO, subscribes to the tenets of reduce, reuse and recycle. Such thinking led to the alt-weekly's recent move to print on paper with nearly 80 percent recycled content. "We had gotten all our process worked out, so now we could look at more environmentally friendly options," says production manager Mike Fox (pictured). A box of factoids on NUVO's table of contents page lists the resources saved annually by printing on this paper, 6,256 trees and 442,777 gallons of water among them. And, says McKinney, "there's no noticeable difference in photos or art and no change in cost."

Artvoice.com Distinguishes Itself with Media-Rich Content

When he decided to upgrade the Web site of his Buffalo, N.Y., alternative weekly, Artvoice publisher Jamie Moses pulled out all the stops. The result is not a simple Web version of the paper, spiced up with a few online gimmicks. It's a media-rich environment, where visitors can watch interviews of the top players in local disputes, check out the latest songs by Buffalo area musicians and get a glimpse of the restaurants they might want to patronize.
