Stocker New Publisher at Riverfront Times

Ken Stocker comes from Denver's Westword to the Riverfront Times, on a mission to raise public awareness of the alt-weekly and thereby boost sales. The 12-year New Times veteran has a green sales staff, but he's convinced the paper is "poised and ready to make a big push." Alt-Weekly National Ad Sales Rebound

After a devastating drop in advertising sales in January, the first-quarter of 2002 is beginning to look better at the two major alt-weekly advertising networks. AWN’s Executive Director Mark Hanzlik projects a first-quarter sales decline of 37 percent, up from a more than 70 percent drop in January. National Ads Take Cliff-Dive

National advertising in alternative weeklies nosedived the first few weeks of 2002. "We're kind of on a shoestring now, but that's how we started," says AWN Executive Director Mark Hanzlik. At least one AAN paper is pulling out the stops to shore up the local ad base: Chicago Reader has restructured its ad rates so that some advertisers now are paying 15 percent less. (FULL STORY)

Ousted C*Ville Editor Starting New Weekly

Earlier this month. Hawes Spencer, editor and co-owner of C*Ville Weekly in Charlottesville, Va., was ousted from the paper by the other two owners, Bill Chapman and Rob Jiranek. The two remaining C*Ville owners are quiet on the subject, but Spencer plans to launch a new weekly, The Hook, on Feb. 7 and has taken four C*Ville staff with him.. (FULL STORY)

Bloomington Independent’s Future Iffy

Publisher Craig Hitchcock tells AAN News he is talking to an East Coast media chain about a sale of the struggling alt-weekly. The Independent’s reopening in the spring depends on a number of factors, among them hanging on to existing advertisers and attracting new investors, Hitchcock says. Parent company Yesse! Communications, in Chapter 11 reorganization since April 2001, is now operating only two papers – Impact Weekly in Dayton, Ohio, and Illinois Times, in Champaign, Ill., down from five at the beginning of 2001. Weekly Planet Editor Going To Creative Loafing

John Sugg will leave Tampa in late August to become senior editor at the company’s flagship paper, Atlanta’s Creative Loafing. Senior editor “in our lexicon means that I’ll be the lead writer and that I’ll be building and leading the writing team,” says Sugg, who is "second on the masthead" under the paper's editor, Ken Edelstein.
