It's Official: Scientologists are Creative Loafing (Tampa)'s New Landlordsnew
As we noted two days ago, the local branch of the Church of Scientology was in talks to buy the building that Creative Loafing recently settled into in Tampa's Ybor Square area. This morning CL's David Warner is reporting that the building was indeed sold to the church, per a letter sent last night to CL's CFO.

Church of Scientology Could be Creative Loafing (Tampa)'s New Landlordnew
Just as CL settles into its new permanent office space in a historic former cigar factory in Tampa's Ybor Square, the alt-weekly has learned that The Church of Scientology is looking to purchase the building from its current owner. The paper, which signed a 5-year lease for the new digs last fall, wasn't aware that the building was to be sold. "If the deal does come to fruition, Creative Loafing will enjoy, if that's the word, a unique vantage point: a next-door-neighbor's view of what goes on at the Tampa facilities of one of the most controversial religious organizations in the world," CL editor David Warner writes.

Ex-Political Editor Gets Local ACLU Award for Work at Creative Loafingnew

The Pinellas County Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union recently gave the Irene Miller Vigilance in Journalism award to Wayne Garcia for his work as political editor at Creative Loafing (Tampa). The chapter's board members unanimously chose Garcia, who left CL to teach at the University of Florida's College of Journalism and Communications this summer, for his "clear objective reporting of the actions of government," chapter president Thom Foley says. "As soon as the name was mentioned, it was like a ripple of 'Oh, that's perfect!' It was an instantaneous unanimous decision."

Creative Loafing (Tampa) Sells Cover, Editorial Space in Holiday Auctionnew

Like several other alt-weeklies, Creative Loafing (Tampa) has put together a holiday auction to raise funds for a local nonprofit, but with a new twist: Cover space, a news story and a restaurant review in the paper are among the items up for bid. "This is our way of saying 'This is not how we do business,'" editor David Warner tells the St. Petersburg Times. "Just this once, you'll see what you get if our content actually is for sale. It's ironic, unchartered (sic) territory."

Creative Loafing (Tampa) Settles into New Digsnew
As part of a bankruptcy judge's August decision to turn Creative Loafing, Inc. over to its creditors, the Tampa paper had to vacate its old office building, which was owned by the Eason family. This week is Creative Loafing (Tampa)'s first in its new offices, located in the historic Ybor Square area, and editor David Warner is already impressed with a seemingly simple aspect: being able to get out of the office and walk around. "That may not sound like much, but after five (!) years cooped up in a former fruit warehouse where you had to get in your car to do anything outside the office, this was, literally, a dream," he writes.

Creative Loafing Auction Setnew
A federal bankruptcy judge scheduled the auction for Aug. 25 after Creative Loafing CEO Ben Eason and the chain's largest creditor agreed on a reorganization plan, reports Creative Loafing Tampa's Wayne Garcia. Under the plan, Atalaya Capital Management LP will take a $19 million haircut, writing down the value of the loan it made two years ago to Eason to $12 million. Atalaya still plans to battle Eason and his allies for ownership of the company and has already put in a $2 million "stalking horse offer" that constitutes "the first bid up during the Aug. 25 equity auction," according to Garcia.
