Sarah Palin and Personality Politicsnew
"This election is not about issues," John McCain's campaign manager recently said. If the McCain/Palin campaign gets its way, it probably won't be. Because if the American people start thinking about real issues -- the ones we've been dealing with for the last eight years -- the GOP ticket won't stand a chance.

Four More Years of 'Change'new
It seems like someone keeps hitting the "replay" button on our election years. Take this year's Republican coronation of John McCain -- we've seen this dog-and-pony show before. Specifically, we saw it in 2000, when George W. Bush ran for president -- the same slogans, same promises, and same candidate packaging.

There's No End in Sight to the Cuts at the St. Louis Post-Dispatchnew
On the morning of August 28, unwelcome news began circulating through the newsroom at the daily: layoffs were imminent. By the end of that day, five editors -- two with almost 30 years of service at the daily -- were asked to collect their belongings and leave the building. In a subsequent interview, executive editor Arnie Robbins refuses to rule out further editorial staff reductions.

McCain's War on Media Could Cost Him in Novembernew

The RNC featured McCain's formal, foolhardy declaration of war on the press -- the same press, by the way, that made him a political superstar. Now the press seems inclined to fire back.

Dozens of Journalists Arrested at RNCnew

As McCain spoke Thursday night about America's obligation to confront "threats to peace and liberty in our time," armed agents were busy cuffing and detaining nearly 400 people a half-mile away. Most were protesters who had overstayed their permit -- many were journalists and bystanders. I was one of them.

Pat's Pass: Why the Buchanan Double Standard?new

Come on, media colleagues. Do some Google searching, read his books, and take a stand. Otherwise, there's only one conclusion viewers can come to: that MSNBC and PBS tacitly endorse Pat Buchanan's racist perspective.

If Journalism is Dead, Then Why Am I Teaching it to Hundreds of College Students?new
The public may have turned against traditional media but it doesn't mean they don't want news and information. The challenge now is to figure out how to earn the money to generate the information, and discover the most efficient ways to deliver it. It's a new media world and, I would argue, the most inspiring time in history to be an aspiring journalist.

Hurricane Sarah Blows McCain on the Bridge to Nowherenew
A rather shameless media swoon set in immediately after Sarah Palin's surprise appointment to the Republican VP spot last Friday. Reporters and anchors jostled each other aside in a race to celebrate the perky Governor What's-Her-Name's predilection for caribou stew, moose pie and children with screwball names. But the honeymoon was short-lived.
