America Al Qaeda Jeremy Scahill Exposes America’s Never-Ending War Against the World

“American Al Qaeda” — you might think the inflammatory label refers to turncoat U.S. citizens that have travelled abroad in order to fight against America’s trademarked “war on terror.” You’d be wrong.
No Verhoeven: Here’s Another Remake That Shouldn’t Have Bothered

This adaptation of the Robocop franchise had the potential to really say something about where America's corrupt militarized-global-corporate-political machine is headed. It didn’t do that.
Police background checks rigorous, but ‘nothing is foolproof'new

The police officer charged with raping a woman while on duty last year had to undergo what Worcester police describe as a “rigorous background check,” but that was when he was initially applying for a job. Officer Rajat Sharda was laid off in 2009 because of budget cuts and reinstated in 2011. When he returned, he had to pass another physical test. His last employer was also checked, but Sharda did not have to go through the same process as when he first applied.

From Shrewsbury to Center Stage: Comedian Mike Birbiglianew

The word “comedian” doesn’t quite do Mike Birbiglia justice –- “storyteller” might be the better word. Still, the Shrewsbury native’s brand of spoken word has made him a popular figure in the world of stand-up comedy, one-man shows, film and radio. His new tour, “Thank God for Jokes,” stops at the Wilbur Theatre in Boston on Friday, February 14 and Saturday, February 15. Tickets sold so quickly that an additional late show was added to both nights. Worcester Magazine caught up with Birbiglia to talk about storytelling, why a joke doesn’t have to be funny and his fondness for Shrewsbury’s pizzerias.

No More Funny Stuffnew

Jeffu is a big fan of multi-screen arrangements, the better to make his pieces interact with themselves. He has several series, including the comprehensive “Nine Gestures” and “1UP,” a massive 80-foot tall video installation at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, that utilize multiple video screens to create intersecting realities, the results of which can be thrilling, funny or, as the artist notes, whatever you take them to be.

Marianne Dissard: The Cat. Not Menew

French-born Marianne Dissard left her longtime home of Tucson last year, but not before recording her third proper album, one that pairs ambitious musical leaps with greater emotional vulnerability. Variety has characterized Dissard's musical path, from 2008's L'Entredeux (written with and produced by Calexico's Joey Burns), which found Dissard channeling Americana through her French chanson tradition, to the bright and theatrical L'Abandon (2011) to two loose, off-the cuff recordings, made in Berlin and Paris with her small touring ensembles...
