Aziz Ansari: The Modern Romantic of Comedynew

You know him as the government employee with the most swagger (Tom Haverford, Parks and Recreation), the rambunctious, Oligocene-era rabbit pirate Squint (Ice Age: Continental Drift) and the guy at James Franco’s party who gets kicked into hell’s sinkhole by Kevin Hart (This is the End). And, of course, just as standup comedian Aziz Ansari. We caught up with Ansari via the interwebs while he was doing book research in Tokyo to chat modern courtship, Parks and Rec and his superior sartorial style.

From Shrewsbury to Center Stage: Comedian Mike Birbiglianew

The word “comedian” doesn’t quite do Mike Birbiglia justice –- “storyteller” might be the better word. Still, the Shrewsbury native’s brand of spoken word has made him a popular figure in the world of stand-up comedy, one-man shows, film and radio. His new tour, “Thank God for Jokes,” stops at the Wilbur Theatre in Boston on Friday, February 14 and Saturday, February 15. Tickets sold so quickly that an additional late show was added to both nights. Worcester Magazine caught up with Birbiglia to talk about storytelling, why a joke doesn’t have to be funny and his fondness for Shrewsbury’s pizzerias.

Roger Ebert RIPnew

As usual when a celebrity dies, the passing of Roger Ebert spawned a passel of cheesy obituary cartoons by editorial cartoonists who depict the departed at the pearly gates, enjoying the afterlife. I hate the format and I usually only do them to mock the form or take a really contrarian position on the subject. This time, I've decided to show what the form could be: an opportunity for assessing a life, and its social and political meaning in our culture. Yes, Virginia, it is possible to draw an intelligent obituary cartoon. But is it possible for it to be printed in a newspaper?
