Newspaper Web Audience Grows, Revenues Declinenew
The Newspaper Association of America (NAA) says that unique monthly visitors reached a record of 67.3 million in 2008 -- up 12.1 percent over 60 million in 2007. But as Media Daily News reports, the big increases in traffic simply are not translating into increased online revenues. Fourth-quarter figures are not yet available from the NAA, but online revenues slumped 2.4 percent in the second quarter and 3 percent in the third.

Ten AAN Members That Bucked the Trends and Grew in '08new
In the old days, when the media reported on problems in the newspaper industry, alternative newspapers weren't included. But alt-weeklies are immune no longer: In 2008, many AAN papers faced some of the same issues afflicting their mainstream brethren in the print media. However, you can still find alt-weeklies that had a pretty good year in 2008. That's just what AAN's editor Jon Whiten did, and he reports on 10 papers that increased revenue in a story published by Editor & Publisher.

Village Voice Media Social-Networking Site Draws Controversynew
"(VVM) ... is using a social-networking company it owns to erode the wall between editorial content and advertising by promoting its advertisers under the guise of community buzz," reports The Stranger. The Seattle alt-weekly made the claim after scouring the user-generated reviews on the Yelp-like LikeMe.net and purportedly discovering that a majority were thumbs-up recommendations written by VVM ad staff. But in a response posted on Seattle Weekly's website, VVM says its employees posted the reviews to "test drive" the new site, which had yet to be officially announced, and that the number of posts do not constitute a majority. VVM also notes that earlier reports that it owns a controlling interest in the new "local recommendation engine" are erroneous.

OC Weekly Debunks Claim That it Practices Payolanew
"We don't praise restaurants simply because they buy ads, even though our very nice ad reps constantly leave menus on my desk insinuating I should review their clients and even though I've had many run-ins with corporate over the years because of the type of restaurants I review," Weekly staff writer Gustavo Arellano writes in response to one restauranteur's charge that the paper "gives great reviews for people who advertise." Arellano pulls out the statistics to prove his point. "According to records given to me by the Weekly's advertising department of every restaurant that advertised in our rag in 2008, only three restaurants of the 51 that I reviewed last year ever bothered to place an ad."

Washington City Paper Capitalizes on Inauguration Fever
Washington's only alt-weekly is putting on a full-court press as the presidential inauguration of Barack Obama draws closer. The City Paper released a 120-page special inauguration issue this week that also featured "The Obama Reader," a 16-page insert from sister paper the Chicago Reader, which has been covering Obama since 1995. (The insert was also published in the Windy City.) Publisher Amy Austin says City Paper will be doing extensive online reporting over the next several days on its inauguration aggregation page. AAN members who want a web icon to link to the ongoing inaugural coverage should email Austin at aaustin (at) washingtoncitypaper.com.

Report: Online Video Ad Rates Fell 25 Percent In Q4new
Average pre-roll ad rates for online video in the fourth quarter dropped 25 percent from the year-earlier period and 12.5 percent from the prior quarter, according to a report from ad network BrightRoll. But the report notes that the drop in prices isn't all bad. "Fundamentally, online video ad inventory has been (and continues to be) overpriced," the report says. "There has been significant pressure (and success) in pushing online video CPMs to converge with rates paid on television. We believe this is good for the category, as it will bring significantly more total dollars into the medium."

Survey: Independent Retailers Outperformed Chains Over Holidays
A survey of 1,142 independent retailers by the Institute for Local Self-Reliance found that holiday sales among the indies declined by an average of five percent in 2008, far less than the loss of holiday business suffered by chain stores. The survey also found that independent retailers in cities with active "Buy Local" campaigns, such as the organized efforts that more than 70 AAN members took part in this year, reported much stronger holiday sales than indies in non-"Buy Local" cities.

In a 52-page complaint to be filed with the Federal Trade Commission today, the Center for Digital Democracy and U.S. Public Interest Research Group allege that emerging mobile marketing shops are using "unfair and deceptive" behavioral targeting strategies. The groups are asking the FTC to probe how mobile ad companies deploy techniques like behavioral targeting and geo-targeting. The complaint also asks the FTC to force the companies to notify consumers about how their data is used, and seek explicit consent to its collection.

Phoenix Media Prez Talks About Purchasing a Spanish-Language Weeklynew
In an interview with New England Ethnic News, Brad Mindich explains why, when other media companies are slashing staff, he thought buying Boston's El Planeta newspaper was a good move. "This is a good niche product that expands what we do," he says, adding that the new acquisition will retain complete editorial control but will share content with the group's other titles when it makes sense. When asked why Phoenix Media chose El Planeta over other Spanish-language publications, Mindich says: "If you look at the other Hispanic newspapers published in this area, with all due respect, they are not very good." That comment has raised the ire of said publications.
