Seven Days Redesigns Print Product, Goes With 'Short Tab' Formatnew
"This new, magazine-style iteration is the result of planning that predates the current recession," the paper says in a quick intro to the new design. The new format will be smaller, not folded and has the ability to have color on any page. The paper says that as a result of the switch, they are also saving a little money, which has allowed them to hire a third full-time staff writer. Seven Days also put together the video below to help explain the changes.

Seattle Weekly's Mayoral Debate Helps Candidates Reach New Audiencenew
At a debate held in a local bar over the weekend, Seattle mayoral candidates Mike McGinn and Joe Mallahan were given one minute to answer each question, with the option of being granted a time extension ... if they took a shot of whiskey. Weekly managing editor and debate co-moderator Mike Seely tells KING 5 News that the forum was designed to get the candidates to show off their personalities instead of relying on the usual sound bites, and also to bring the race to a new audience. "We figure we had a captive audience that had about no interest in politics, and we figured we'd force feed them politics," Seely says.

New Owners Bring Changes to Nashville Scenenew
Nashville-based SouthComm purchased the Scene from Village Voice Media last month, and has swiftly been making changes. Former managing editor and longtime staffer Jim Ridley has taken over as editor, and the paper rolled out a glossy look this week. In addition, SouthComm has brought all editorial staffers of its Nashville properties (it owns The City Paper, NashvillePost.com and a handful of smaller print publications) under one roof, and done the same -- in a different building -- for business-side staff. Scene writer Bruce Barry says Nashville is "the alpha test" of SouthComm's publishing theory, which involves owning a unique blend of niche publications in a single market. Barry also points out that many SouthComm higher-ups are "very conservative" and wonders how that might affect the alt-weekly going forward.

Survey: Impulse Offers Work Best for Mobile Adsnew
A new survey from Compete finds that nearly half of all smartphone owners are receptive to location-based offers at restaurants and offers to save and pursue at their leisure, and 45 percent would use mobile grocery coupons. "[It looks like] impulse purchases are a better hook for marketers than a considered purchase," Compete's Elaine Sanfilippo tells Marketing Daily. "Those offers that have that instant impact really resonate with people."

Media Critic: Here are Four Ways to 'Improve Things' at Creative Loafingnew
St. Petersburg Times media critic Eric Deggans says that Creative Loafing should, among other things, "get some aggressive, entertaining name writers back in the house" and "break news, especially news mainstream outlets won't report." He says alt-weeklies are well-positioned to do the latter. "An alternative newspaper often does its best work holding accountable those who hold others accountable," Deggans writes. "There's a multitude of civic issues at hand that a grass roots alternative newspaper could grab hold of, and explore in new ways; doing that in a provocative, localized way builds the brand tremendously."
