NOW Magazine Creates Hybrid Documentary/Mockumentary About Itselfnew

The Toronto alt-weekly last week debuted NOW Magazine: The Movie, a nine-week web film series that simultaneously chronicles the paper's history and makes fun of it in the mockumentary style. In the movie, a fictional theater troupe is commissioned by NOW CEO Alice Klein to create a musical about the paper on the heels of its 25th anniversary in 2006, with that plot intertwined with archive footage from NOW's real-life history. "It is actually truly funny, and one of the only ways you can achieve that is to be prepared to take the piss out of yourself," editor and publisher Michael Hollett says. "It's entertaining, but at the same time there is real information that emerges about our history, which is a pretty proud one." The five-minute episodes, directed by Second City alum Brian G. Smith, will all be released on the NOW Magazine: The Movie microsite. You can check out the trailer below.

Study: Twitter is Driving Traffic to News Websitesnew

A new report from the online ad network Chitika says that, among clients in its network, news websites get the most referral traffic from Twitter, outpacing movies, tech and medical (and tying the all-encompassing "Other" category). "Given Twitter's unique ability to bring information instantly to large numbers of people, it's not surprising that news leads the way," Chitika notes. "Twitter's instantaneous and collaborative nature has made it out to be the bleeding edge of all news."

Recession Brings Both Clouds and Silver Linings to New Haven Advocatenew

That's what the Yale Daily News finds in a report on how three local news organizations are faring in the downturn. While the Advocate's "circulation is steady," as managing editor John Stoehr points out, publisher Joshua Mamis admits that the paper's page count has decreased. Mamis also notes that although the paper has lost some national advertisers, many local advertisers have remained loyal.

Dallas Observer's Live-Blogging Wins Local Bar Association Awardnew

The Dallas Bar Association honors the best legal news reporting in the Dallas-Fort Worth area with its annual Stephen Philbin Awards; this year the Dallas Observer's Jim Schutze and Robert Wilonsky took home an award in the new category of Electronic Media News/Feature Article for their live-blogging of a City Hall corruption trial, which the association says "gave readers a play-by-play account of each day's courtroom activities."

AAN West and Web Publishing Conferences Return This Winter

After a one-year absence, both AAN West and the Web Publishing Conference are slated to return to the Bay Area this winter. The Web Publishing Conference will begin with a social event on the evening of Wednesday, Jan. 27, and will end on the afternoon of Friday, Jan. 29. L.A. Weekly Launches iPhone Appnew

The newly-launched free app "features over 200 concert and event listings that you can sort by date, nearby and neighborhood, plus over 1000 easy-to-search restaurant listings, including recommendations from our Pulitzer Prize winning food critic Jonathan Gold," the Weekly says. In addition, the app will feature event and nightlife coverage and slideshows.

Ex-Nashville Scene Editor Returns as SouthComm's Interim Exec. Editornew

Liz Garrigan, who had recently been helping the Scene out as a freelance contributing editor, will become the interim executive editor for SouthComm's three main Nashville publications: The Scene, The City Paper and NashvillePost.com. SouthComm CEO Chris Ferrell, who bought the alt-weekly from Village Voice Media in August, describes Garrigan's new job as "a temporary stint of a few months' duration," during which time she will be responsible for "develop[ing] a more smoothly functioning, integrated organization" in regards to converged editorial operations. The Tennessean reports that the integration has already begun, with SouthComm merging the City Paper's Thursday print edition with the Scene. (The City Paper still publishes a print edition on Monday.)

Report: Local Online Ad Revenue Will Rise 12 Percent in '09new

A new outlook report from Borrell Associates finds that local online ad revenue will continue to rise for the next few years. However, the report warns of a pending slowdown. After a projected 12 percent rise this year, Borrell forecasts only a 5 percent increase in 2010, and predicts that revenue will peak in 2013, at $16.4 billion.

Phoenix Media Sues Facebooknew

Phoenix Media, the parent company of the Phoenix alt-weeklies in Boston, Portland and Providence, filed a lawsuit yesterday alleging that Facebook infringed on a patent held by the company's Tele-Publishing Inc. (TPI) division for publishing personal pages on online dating services. A Facebook spokesperson tells the Boston Globe the suit is "without merit," something Phoenix Media executive editor Peter Kadzis disputes. "The intellectual concepts that Facebook uses to give its users maximum flexibility of choice while maintaining the highest level of privacy replicate/duplicate those developed by TPI many years ago," he says. "It's not a frivolous suit."

Baltimore City Paper Launches 'Baltimanual' City Guidenew

"It is nice to have all the restaurants and attractions and souvenir shops down by the harbor," the intro to the paper's city guide reads. "But Baltimore is so much more, and knowing that -- and wanting to share that information with future visitors -- inspired the staff of City Paper, Baltimore's Free Alternative Weekly, to create this guide to our city." The "Baltimanual" is both a print product and a microsite that will be constantly updated with new content.
