News Racks Corralled in Phillynew

News racks in downtown Philadelphia have been corralled by a non-profit charged with developing the center city. Philadelphia City Paper Publisher Paul Curci was supposed to be part of the committee planning the installation, but he says he got no chance to comment and was told only the day before the corrals were installed. Nevertheless, Curci says he has no complaints about them.

Newspaper companies in the District of Columbia, including Washington City Paper, reached a voluntary agreement with downtown business officials on newsracks. Under the agreement, publishers will use demonstration sites to test three different rack systems to see which one works best. (FULL STORY)

Starbucks Backs Away From Exclusive Distribution Proposalnew

Last week, several news outlets reported that the coffee chain was pursuing marketing deals that would provide local dailies with exclusive distribution in return for free advertising and the papers' agreement to stop selling at competing coffee shops. Now Starbucks officials say the proposal was the result of internal miscommunication.

Starbucks Wants Free Ads in Return For Exclusive Distributionnew

Several daily-newspaper execs tell E&P that the coffee chain has threatened to boot their paper from local stores. In addition to free ads, the dailies say Starbucks wants them to pull out of competing single-copy-sales outlets. E&P also reports that Starbucks managers can choose which local papers to stock, but the company eventually wants each store in a given market to offer the same three papers.

News Boxes Not Yet Banned in Bostonnew

A Boston judge has temporarily blocked a ban on news boxes in the Back Bay. The local ordinance, which went into effect August 9, was challenged by the non-AAN alt pub Weekly Dig and the paid circulation weekly, Editorial Humor. The judge issued a restraining order, and now other publications, including the Boston Phoenix, are joining the lawsuit.
