The Texas Observer Names New Editor

The Observer today announced that Bob Moser is the publication's new editor. He replaces Jake Bernstein, who left to become a reporter for ProPublica in June. Moser, who got his start as editor of North Carolina's Independent Weekly, has recently been writing and editing for The Nation, and is the author of the new book Blue Dixie: Awakening the South's Democratic Majority. "There is no place in the country evolving more rapidly, or changing more fundamentally, than Texas," Moser says in a release. "The Observer will aim to deploy our tough, thorough, hard-nosed reporting to nudge the state in a progressive direction."

Boise Weekly Eliminates Ad Director Position
Longtime ad director Nancy E. Spittle is leaving the Weekly after seven years "to pursue new professional adventures," according to a press release. Her position will not be filled -- instead, the Weekly has hired two additional account executives. "Even though Boise Weekly still has positive revenue growth over last year, the economy requires all companies to tighten ship and work hard to increase revenue and improve performance in sales," the press release notes.

Republican State Attorneys General Urge GOP Senators on Shield Law
Last week, 13 Republican state attorneys general sent a letter to Republican senators urging them to support the Free Flow of Information Act. "As our states' chief law enforcement officers, we are in a unique position to confirm that our shield laws have not resulted in any degradation in our ability to protect our citizens," the letter reads. "Still, important provisions have been added to this legislation to carefully and thoroughly protect national security and public safety." A House version of the bill was overwhelmingly approved last October, and the Senate Judiciary Committee also approved the bill in the same month.

California Bill to Fight Newspaper Theft Passes Senate
On Friday, the California State Senate passed AB 1778 by a margin of 21-16. The legislation places "modest requirements" on recyclers who engage in large cash transactions for newspapers or other materials. The legislation requires recyclers to pay by check and obtain ID from individuals who bring in more than $50 of newspapers. The law, which has been championed by the East Bay Express, San Francisco Bay Guardian, and other publications, passed the Assembly in June. If signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the law will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2009.
