Philadelphia City Paper Hosts Election Day Live Photoblog
In an real-time experiment with user-generated content, today City Paper is hosting a reader-submitted photostream on its website to capture all the local Election Day action. "Trouble at the polls? Take a pic. Long lines at your polling place? Take a pic. Thugs trying to intimidate voters? Take a pic," says editor-in-chief Brian Howard. "Get snapping. Then get submitting. You're all poll watchers tomorrow." The photos will be on display at City Paper's homepage and at citypaper.net/electionphotos. Readers can upload photos via the paper's Flickr stream at www.flickr.com/groups/cp_election.

Will Swaim Named Publisher of LA CityBeat
Will Swaim has been named publisher of LA CityBeat and New Angeles Magazine, effective Nov. 10. Swaim was most recently the founding editor and publisher of The District Weekly, a non-AAN weekly in Long Beach. Prior to that, he was OC Weekly's founding editor in 1995, and went on to become publisher of that paper as well, before stepping down in January 2007. At CityBeat, he'll be reunited with former Weekly colleague Rebecca Schoenkopf, who is now CityBeat's editor. "LA CityBeat and New Angeles are terrific publications," Swaim says in a release. "I'm thrilled to have this chance to use what I've learned in Orange County and Long Beach to help them reach their enormous potential."

Boston's Weekly Dig Prints Two Mock Covers for 2012 Election
You read that right -- 2012. The Dig published two covers this week imitating the look and feel of Boston's two dailies, the Globe and the Herald, which predict the headlines four years into prospective McCain and Obama administrations. Managing editor Laura Dargus says the idea was to provide a little humor to the overwrought election. "I'm so sick of this already, so it seemed natural to just move beyond 2008 and have fun with 2012 before it, too, becomes overdone," Dargus says in a release.

The Boston Phoenix Names America's 25 Scariest Conservatives
To celebrate Halloween this year, the Phoenix has prepared a "field guide of sorts" to the "fire-breathing bloviators [who] are using political bogeymen, scare tactics, and scorched-earth ideology to rally their base." The paper argues that the impending likely takeover of the White House and Congress by Democrats will only serve to "make these conservatives angry -- and thus exponentially even more dangerous." Coming in at number one is the omnipresent TV and radio talker Sean Hannity. Santa Fe Reporter Dominates News Category in State Press Awards
Reporter staff writer Dave Maass dominated the news writing category for Division 1 Weeklies (over 5,000 circulation) in the annual New Mexico Press Association newspaper contest. Maass won both first and second place in the category, making him the only winner in the category for Division 1. Additionally, SFR writer Zane Fischer placed first for column writing. The awards were announced at a banquet on Sunday.

The Other Paper Parent Company Will Delist its Stocknew
American Community Newspapers, which purchased the Columbus, Ohio, alt-weekly in May 2007, announced on Tuesday its intent to voluntarily remove its stock from NYSE Alternext (formerly the American Stock Exchange). The move will "save management time and attention" and also "eliminate listing fees and result in reduced expenses," according to a press release. The company expects its last day on the exchange to be Nov. 11, but shares could continue to trade on an over-the counter basis after the delisting takes effect.

The Weekly celebrates an historic milestone with a special 20th anniversary issue that hit the streets (and the web) yesterday. The 200-page issue, which is saddle stitched and features the Weekly's first-ever glossy cover, "takes a long backwards glance at the people, the institutions, the buildings, the parties and the natural disasters that have helped shape the community" since Coast Weekly (the paper's original name) debuted in the fall of 1988. Syracuse New Times Cartoonist Releases Second Book
Joe Glisson, who has been New Times' political cartoonist for 25 years, is celebrating with a new retrospective book, Seems Like Old Times. "I had done the first book [1986's Dome Sweet Dome] a number of years ago, and I thought that I would like to have a companion to it," he says. "And this is the 25th year that I've been doing this, so I thought it was an appropriate time to do a retrospective. I don't know if anybody else feels that way, but I wanted to do it." Alt-Weekly Cartoonist Derf Releases New Book
Derf, whose comic "The City" has appeared in various alt-weeklies since 1990, has just released his latest book, Punk Rock & Trailer Parks. The graphic novel "takes place in recession-ravaged Akron, Ohio, in 1980, at the peak of the Rubber City's unlikely and lively punk rock scene." It's Derf's longest book yet, and his first work of fiction (check out a preview here). In an interview with Comicon.com's The Pulse, Derf says for his next project he is re-working his first book, My Friend Dahmer, the true story of his teenage friendship with the future serial killer, as a "full-blown graphic novel."
