An Open Letter to Gordon Ramsaynew

I tried, Chef, I really did, and on numerous occasions -- but I just cannot sit through an entire episode of Hell's Kitchen. Invariably, after or during one of your obscene and belittling rants, I tell you to shut the fuck up, consciously using one of your favorite expletives.
Sydney Pollack, R.I.P.new
Once upon a time -- when both personal expectations and statistical expectancy were lower -- 73 would have counted as a reasonably long life. It no longer seems that way, but Pollack's professional accomplishments certainly suggest a full -- even bursting -- life.

Spanish-Language TV: Perverse and Profoundnew

La Cosa Nostra claims a half-million mostly young and middle-age viewers. It can be incomprehensible, reprehensible, raunchy, wacky, and, at times, insightful. There are sketches about old folks having sex, racial jokes, glimpses of bestiality, digs at religion, and -- let's not forget -- a stripper and a pole.

The New Indy Offers More Thrills and Chills, but Why?new
As everyone knows, Indiana Jones is back at it again, some 19 years after what some of us thought was The Last Crusade. Everyone's older now -- Spielberg, Lucas, Ford, us. But what really seems old, and rather tired, is the idea itself, that a movie can be devoted almost entirely to thrills and chills.
Golden Oldienew
The Indiana Jones franchise has grown older and more sentimental, but it still puts on a good show.

Cirque du So What?new
A suicidal stunt man and a little girl with a broken arm? This could get messy. Compulsive, self-indulgent fabulist--both the protagonist and the film have a lot going for them.

Controversy at Cannes: 'The Headless Woman'new

At Cannes, one can reliably emerge from seeing a near masterpiece only to discover that everyone -- or at least the influential industry trade newspapers -- has declared the very same movie une catastrophe! Such is the case with The Headless Woman.

Norwegian Pie: Joachim Trier's 'Reprise'new
Like their American youth-movie counterparts, the 20-something guy friends of Norwegian director Trier's Reprise spend a lot of time talking about and clumsily pursuing the fairer sex. Only, his characters are as much (or more) concerned with getting published as getting laid.
