With Barack Obama's Jan. 20 presidential inauguration practically upon us, my thoughts have turned to the very complex subject of American presidents. As I contemplated the subject, I had an odd revelation. It happens that I have spent a not inconsiderable amount of time around presidents, vice presidents and presidential candidates.

"Anybody but Cheney" in 2008 can be taken symbolically as well as literally. Obama and McCain should not pick people who given the chance would take the country in exactly the opposite direction the people want it to go and that the candidate promised it would go.

Making a projection today allows us to see, regionally speaking, where each candidate is strong and weak, and which states each must defend or pick off.
