Mr. Dylan, Mr. Eversnew
It was raining the morning of May 17, 2003. I was in my office, worrying about what the Jubilee! JAM organizers must be going through. It's hard to make this festival pay off in good weather, not to mention in times of thunderstorms and crime hysteria. I knew the rain, coming on the JAM's big day—Cassandra Wilson, Bob Dylan and Gerald Levert were scheduled that evening—would be playing hell with the moods of the organizers.

"Urban warriors" is what I've dubbed the growing group of people of all ages in Jackson who are determined to reverse the narrative here. These are people who know that crime is a symptom of much larger problems, and who don't try to use the problem as a way to get cheap votes or attention.

Between Man and His Godnew
Some really smart people knew that when they wrote the First Amendment, which includes two intertwining clauses to ensure that no one abridges our freedom of religion by trying to establish their own. Put simply, the government doesn't get to pick or establish or force any particular faith or its prayers and practices, because that obviously endangers freedom of religion for all of us.
