Sofia Coppola's 'Somewhere' Authentic and Contemporarynew

Somewhere’s central character reads as sensitive — maybe even simple — and despite a career of steady gigs, 37-year-old actor Stephen Dorff is somehow unfamiliar enough to slip into the character of Marco.

'The Girl From Monaco': Trial and Erosnew
To say that writer-director Anne Fontaine's film wanders from genre to genre doesn't exalt her (and Benoit Graffin's) screenplay, but their transparent lift of the trio relationship from Simone de Beauvoir's She Came to Stay is an inspired move.

'Roman de Gare' is a Story of Reversals and Revengenew
Claude Lelouch's Roman de Gare is full of deceitful characters, all unaware that they are making their way into a novel called God, the Other.

'Romance and Cigs': Lewder, Smarter Than the Average Musicalnew
The atmosphere is just surreal enough for songs from Engelbert Humperdinck, Tom Jones, and Connie Francis to be worked in organically, and, as the cast members aren't singers, per se, their voices are often featured along with the original musical numbers, creating a sing-along kind of purity.

'Lust, Caution' Offers Arty Escapismnew
When your choices are limited to the Dane Cook comedy, the depressing 9-11/Afghanistan/Iraq War film, the ubiquitous cops-mafia-drugs drama, and Sawstel, I say by all means bring on the World War II-era, foreign-language erotic espionage thriller by Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee.
