Vaclav Havel Finally Picks Up His Village Voice Obiesnew

The first president of the Czech Republic, who won Off-Broadway's highest honor for plays he wrote in 1968, 1970 and 1984, was feted this week at New York's Public Theater. "Havel was previously unable to collect his Obie Awards in person," says the Voice, "because, following the New York opening of (his 1968 prizewinner) The Memorandum, he returned to his home in Prague, where he was almost immediately placed under house arrest by the then Soviet-controlled government of Czechoslovakia." The Voice's chief theater critic and current Obie committee chairman, Michael Feingold, presented Havel with a special certificate attesting to the three awards.

Annual Pazz & Jop Poll May Have Competitionnew

For 32 years, the Village Voice's annual music poll has "enjoyed an almost unchallenged run" as the gold standard of year-end Top 10 lists, says the New York Times. But the angst created by New Times' takeover of the paper, and the ensuing departure of music critic and poll organizer Robert Christgau, has emboldened a music blog to mount a challenge to Pazz and Jop's hegemony. After Christgau turned them down, Gawker Media's The Idolator hired former Seattle Weekly music editor Michaelangelo Matos to organize the competing poll, which "will largely be modeled after Pazz & Jop," according to the Times.

Voice Scribe Pens Unflinching Account of Giuliani and 9/11

In its Sunday metro column "Reading New York," the New York Times plugs "Grand Illusion: The Untold Story of Rudy Giuliani and 9/11" (second item), co-authored by Village Voice veteran Wayne Barrett. Barrett teamed up with CBSNews.com Producer Dan Collins to take a hard look at the New York City mayor's performance before, during and after the terrorist attack. "Given all the hagiography that has been generated by the subject," writes Sam Roberts, “'Grand Illusion' is a welcome and overdue corrective, one that amplifies the gaps in preparedness, management and communications, and challenges the post-9/11 legend."

Underground Press Icon John Wilcock Still Publishing

John Wilcock was already an experienced British journalist when he began writing "The Village Square" column for The Village Voice in 1955. These days, the 78-year-old writes a weekly column in The Montecito Journal, self-publishes a monthly zine called The Ojai Orange, and produces a public access television show. The twisted tale of his life, as revealed to the Ventura County Reporter, also includes stints as a travel writer for The New York Times and Frommer's, a columnist for LA Weekly, and an apprentice to a witch. Wilcock was friends with Andy Warhol and Abbie Hoffman, but says he "never really got along very well" with Norman Mailer, because Mailer was "a bit self-important."

The Village Voice Lays Off Eight, Including Robert Christgaunew

Five of those dismissed yesterday were senior arts editors, including Christgau, who had been a music critic for the paper on and off since 1969. The other three employees were design staff, including Art Director Minh Uong. In a statement, Village Voice Media describes the layoffs as an effort "to reconfigure the editorial department to place an emphasis on writers as opposed to editors." David Blum, who was named the editor of the Voice three weeks ago, tells The New York Times, "It wouldn't have been appropriate for me to weigh in on these decisions before I even took over the job." Blum's first day is September 12.

Foreign Policy Magazine, Village Voice: Twin Towers, Twin Covers

The Huffington Post notes that the most recent issue of Foreign Policy magazine inspires a touch of déjà vu: The cover has the same concept as one published by The Village Voice shortly after September 11. A spokesperson for Foreign Policy says "the similarities are a complete coincidence."
