Times-Shamrock Papers Join Ruxton Media Group
Baltimore City Paper, Metro Times, Orlando Weekly and the San Antonio Current are as of today exclusively represented by Ruxton for national print advertising, according to a press release. The papers will join their newly-acquired sister paper, the Cleveland Scene, as part of the advertising network owned and operated by Village Voice Media. VVM chief operating officer Scott Tobias says the discussions about joining Ruxton began while VVM and Times-Shamrock were negotiating the sale of the Scene earlier this year. The addition of the four papers means Ruxton has a print presence in 50 American cities, including all of the top 20 markets, with a total weekly print circulation of more than 3.6 million.

Portland Phoenix Launches 2008 'Portland Phoelympics'

The Portland Phoenix has created a local alternative to the Beijing Olympic Games, the 2008 Portland Phoelympics, which will be "free of smog, lead toys, forced child-labor, political oppression, and large, ancient walls," according to a press release. "The Phoenix is proud to have created an international event worthy of the great city of Portland," said Marc Shepard, associate publisher of the Phoenix and president of the IPC (International Phoelympic Committee). "We expect the economic impact of these games on the city to be substantial, as we've already spent close to $47 on equipment, and that does NOT include our bar tab and first aid supplies."

TV Passes Newspapers as Dominant Ad Platform; Online Hot on Trailnew
Veronis Suhler Stevenson's (VSS) annual Communications Industry Forecast notes that newspapers, long the dominant U.S. advertising platform, have fallen behind broadcast TV this year, which itself is poised to be usurped by the internet within the next three years, Media Daily News reports. The VSS report also shows that traditional media are increasingly claiming online ad space. VSS estimates that traditional media operators will account for nearly half (49.5%) of online ad dollars this year. That share is up from less than a third (29.1%) in 2002, and is projected to take a dominant position by 2011.

Santa Barbara Named One of '10 That Do it Right' by E&P
Editor & Publisher has recognized the Santa Barbara Independent as one of 10 newspapers of note, in their annual "10 That Do It Right" feature. The Independent is the only AAN member on this year's list (the Bay Guardian made the cut last year), which showcases newspapers in the US that are "performing in one particular aspect -- from marketing to online video -- that merits consideration and maybe even emulation by their peers." E&P notes that the Independent has become the top source for local news in town by capitalizing on turmoil at the daily Santa Barbara News-Press and by focusing on its website. "When you talk about the paper of record, you really are assuming that's the paper that has the institutional memory," Indy editor-in-chief Marianne Partridge says. "The fact is, it's our paper that has all the institutional memory."
