Columnist Leaves Philadelphia Weekly After Eleven Years

Solomon Jones' final column appears in the Feb. 1 issue of PW. In it, Jones writes that he has had many opportunities in his life, but he is "most grateful for the opportunity that was afforded me 11 years ago, when I walked in the doors of Philadelphia Weekly." Jones is leaving to serve on an exploratory committee that will determine if Congressman Chaka Fattah should run for mayor of Philadelphia.

LEO Founder Runs for Congressnew

John Yarmuth, founder and former executive editor of the Louisville Eccentric Observer, will run in the Democratic primary for Kentucky's 3rd Congressional District seat, which is currently held by Republican Anne Northup. Although Yarmuth sold LEO to Times Publishing in 2003, he has continued to pen a regular column for the paper. (LEO is suspending the column as long as Yarmuth remains in the race.) Michael Clingaman, the executive director of Kentucky's Republican Party, told The Courier-Journal that Yarmuth is "the most liberal of the liberals, and he's bragged about it in print for 15 years."

LA Weekly Raises Doubts About Memoirist's Identitynew

In an article published Jan. 26, LA Weekly's Matthew Fleisher called into question whether the Navajo memoirist Nasdijj is actually Timothy Barrus, a writer of gay pornographic fiction. The allegations come soon after similar stories about memoirist James Frey and novelist J.T. Leroy. Nasdijj is the author of Geronimo's Bones, The Blood Runs Like a River Through My Dreams, and The Boy and the Dog Are Sleeping, which won a PEN/Beyond Margins award for racial and ethnic diversity.
