The Village Voice Lays Off Eight, Including Robert Christgaunew

Five of those dismissed yesterday were senior arts editors, including Christgau, who had been a music critic for the paper on and off since 1969. The other three employees were design staff, including Art Director Minh Uong. In a statement, Village Voice Media describes the layoffs as an effort "to reconfigure the editorial department to place an emphasis on writers as opposed to editors." David Blum, who was named the editor of the Voice three weeks ago, tells The New York Times, "It wouldn't have been appropriate for me to weigh in on these decisions before I even took over the job." Blum's first day is September 12.

Foreign Policy Magazine, Village Voice: Twin Towers, Twin Covers
The Huffington Post notes that the most recent issue of Foreign Policy magazine inspires a touch of déjà vu: The cover has the same concept as one published by The Village Voice shortly after September 11. A spokesperson for Foreign Policy says "the similarities are a complete coincidence."

Panel Discussion on Alt-Weeklies Available Online
The Project for Excellence in Journalism recently posted comments about the future of alternative newspapers submitted by Richard Karpel, executive director of AAN; Matt Gibson, publisher of The Missoula Independent; Julia Goldberg, editor of the Santa Fe Reporter; and Alison True, editor of the Chicago Reader. The discussion is one of nine that were conducted via e-mail to supplement PEJ's report, The State of the News Media 2006, which was issued earlier this year. The four panelists share their thoughts on the New Times/Village Voice Media merger, the aging of the alt-weekly audience and the long-term outlook for mainstream-media organizations.

Activists Deface Worcester Magazine Covernew

Last week's cover story by Worcester's alt-weekly addressed the practical complications of a new state law allowing over-the-counter sales of hypodermic needles to reduce the spread of HIV among intravenous-drug users. Ten AIDS activists who thought the cover "sensationalized" the issue took it upon themselves to change it, applying Photoshopped stickers to 2,000 copies in order to alter the meaning of a subhed. Then they called the local daily to publicize the stunt. Worcester Magazine Editor Michael Warshaw didn't take offense: “This is exactly the kind of ruckus we’re looking for," he told the Boston Phoenix.

Westword Pranks 'The Real World' -- Sort Of
"The Real World" is filming its next season in Denver, and according to writer Jared Jacang Maher, the Westword crew "desperately wanted to be a part of this celestial sphere of reality television." They put together a fake cast, added cameramen, producers, and security, and hit the town. Young Denverites in bars reacted as you might expect, hurling insults, mugging for the camera, and hitting on the cast. They even encountered a legitimate MTV celebrity -- Holly Shand from "Road Rules: Latin America." The cast also filmed fake "confessionals" and edited the footage into a four-minute "episode," available for download here in MP4 format.

BusinessWeek Cover Looks Familiar to Seattle Weeklynew

"Do journalists in New York do any original thinking at all?" asks Chuck Taylor, managing editor of Seattle Weekly. The paper's July 20, 2005 cover -- which just won a third-place AltWeekly Award for Illustration -- is remarkably similar to the cover of the most recent BusinessWeek. Both feature the banner headline "Bill Gates Gets Schooled" and depict Gates in a classroom.

CONVENTION: Clinton Speaks, and Speaks Some More

"The greatest thing about not being president anymore is I can say whatever I think," Clinton told AAN members at a luncheon this afternoon. And he said quite a lot, talking well beyond his scheduled time. Clinton commended alt-weeklies for "filling a void" created by two-dimensional portrayals in mainstream publications. He also took questions from the unusually well-behaved audience.
