AAN Presents First Annual Molly Ivins Award to Keith Olbermann
The award recognizes a journalist or media figure whose reporting or commentary has had a profound impact on the public's understanding of vital national issues. It will be presented to the Countdown host in a ceremony to be held this afternoon in New York City. "I'm utterly honored," said Olbermann, "largely because I'd still like to be Molly Ivins when I grow up." To recognize Olbermann's achievement, AAN will donate $2,000 in his name to the Molly Ivins Fund for Investigative Reporting at the Texas Observer, where the Ivins served as co-editor from 1970 to 1976.

2007 AltWeekly Awards Finalists Announced
The finalists include stories about a unitard-clad unicyclist, tuberculosis testing in prisons, and a cancer that may be caused by the implosion of the World Trade Center on 9/11. Other honorees that emerged from the 1,481 entries include a comic strip starring Republican strategist Ralph Reed and an illustrated guide for African-Americans to navigate DC's posh Georgetown neighborhood. L.A. Weekly and Style Weekly are the big winners this year, with the former setting a contest record with 13 winning entries.

Nineteen Papers Apply for AAN Membership
That's almost twice as many as last year, and the most since 2001, when 22 papers applied. This year's hopefuls are spread across 14 states and one Canadian province, and include many repeat applicants and several other papers with pre-existing connections to AAN. And in a new twist in the admissions process, AAN prepared a report that provides background information on the companies and individuals who hold ownership stakes in each paper.

Valley Advocate Joins Other Papers in Voluntary News Box Agreementnew
The memo seeks to avoid regulatory legislation of news box placement in the town of Greenfield, Mass. Under the agreement, labels with names and phone numbers of those responsible for it will be on each box, according to the Republican. Meanwhile, town officials are studying legislative approaches in case the publishers' agreement doesn't fix the problems of overcongestion, disrepair and poor placement.

Minneapolis Alt-Weekly to Cease Publishingnew
Two-time AAN applicant Pulse of the Twin Cities will shut down within the month, the Star Tribune reports. The paper was founded by community activist Ed Felien in 1997 after the Twin Cities Reader was shuttered. "It's been a wonderful run; I've loved every minute of it and hated every minute of it," Felien says, adding that it "has never been financially remunerative." Felien tells the Star Tribune that he will continue to publish his monthly newspaper, Southside Pride, and he also suggests that Pulse may continue to maintain an online presence.

Recently Passed News Box Legislation in Connecticut Favors Dailiesnew
The City Council of West Haven voted unanimously in favor of Councilwoman Gail Burns' proposal to limit how many news boxes can go on a block, and it was signed into law earlier this month. When space is an issue, "dailies get first dibs, then twice-weeklies, then weeklies and so on," according to the Advocate. The law seems to have been thought up, drafted and passed in haste, as Burns tells the Advocate no one did an inventory of the boxes, and no one bothered to notify any of publishers before the law was passed. "Anyone can attend a public hearing," Burns says. The law "flies in the face of the First Amendment," Advocate publisher Joshua Mamis says. "Plus, the prioritization is puzzling. Why would the town give preferential treatment to a publication owned by an out-of-state company that has over the years reduced its commitment to local news gathering?"

Nashville Passes News Box Regulationnew
The Metro Council approved the legislation this week despite opposition from the Nashville Scene and other local publications. According to the Tennessean, the law takes effect July 1. It will restrict the placement of news boxes and require publishers to pay permit fees and maintain their newsracks in good repair. "I'm not sure what it's supposed to accomplish, other than that we'll all have to register with a government entity and keep the boxes in working order," Scene publisher Chris Ferrell says. The councilman who co-sponsored the ordinance says he would lead the charge to rescind it if local publishers developed a better, voluntary plan.
An earlier self-policing plan submitted by publishers was rejected by the council.
