Nat Hentoff Celebrates 50 Years at the Village Voice

"Hentoff began writing a regular media and civil rights column for the Voice on January 8, 1958, and is still going strong," according to a press release. To celebrate, the paper is running two special features on the columnist. In the first, Allen Barra remembers when, in the midst of "a typical internecine squabble" in the late '80s, he took a cheap shot at Hentoff via a letter to the editor. Hentoff's response was to give Barra a Pee Wee Russell album with a note saying: "Listen to this. It might clear your head out." Barra writes: "Instead of jumping into the argument with pettiness and personal acrimony, he sought to create a dialogue with reason, tolerance, and jazz. What can you do with a guy like that?" In a companion feature, the Voice is running nearly 6,000 words of "Nat Hentoff's Greatest Hits," excerpts from half a century of columns.

Sale of Style Weekly Explored
As we noted yesterday, Landmark Communications, which owns both Style Weekly and Port Folio Weekly, has hired investment bankers to explore the possibility of selling the company's holdings, which include more than 100 publications and other properties, including The Weather Channel. "Although I was disappointed to hear the Battens were exploring a sale, our readers will continue to get the best of in-depth, local reporting on news, arts and culture," Style editor Jason Roop says in a press release. Publisher Lori Collier Waran concurs, noting that readers, advertisers and other business partners can expect business as usual. "We just celebrated our 25th anniversary, and we're still going strong."

SGI Applauds Congress for Approving FOIA Reform
The House yesterday passed a FOIA reform bill that the Senate passed late last week, sending the bill to the president's desk. The Associated Press reports that the administration isn't saying whether Bush will sign the bill. (He had promised a veto of an early draft of the legislation). The ten media groups -- including AAN -- that make up the Sunshine in Government Initiative (SGI) applauded the Congress for passing what could become the first overhaul of FOIA laws in a decade. "After years of growing government secrecy, today's vote reaffirms the
public's fundamental right to know," says Rick Blum, coordinator of SGI. "Fixing FOIA isn't a secret. This bill
makes commonsense changes to help the public know what government is up to."

SGI Applauds Senate Passage of FOIA Bill, Urges Speedy House Action
On Friday, a revised bill strengthening the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) passed the Senate by a voice vote, according to the Associated Press. The bill makes minor revisions to previously passed legislation to meet concerns of the House of Representatives, which could take it up this week before adjourning for the year. It creates an independent ombudsman to resolve citizen disputes and help agencies strengthen FOIA, creates tracking systems so the public can easily track the status of requests and lets requesters more easily recover legal costs when agencies improperly deny requests. The Sunshine in Government Initiative, of which AAN is a member, urges the House to take action and pass its version of the bill.

Tucson Weekly Offers Readers a Chance to Seek Presidency
After discovering the only thing a candidate has to do is fill out a notarized nomination form to get on Arizona's Feb. 5 presidential-primary ballot, Weekly writer Jim Nintzel decided to offer readers a chance to seek the presidency. And thus, Project White House, the paper's first-ever presidential-primary contest, was born. Readers are invited to send their campaign materials via mail or email to Project White House. If deemed newsworthy, the paper will give their campaigns some ink. Even if not, the Weekly may still help them get on the ballot by notarizing their nomination forms at no cost.
