AAN Promotes Regional Staff Training Fund
At the annual meeting in Portland last year, AAN members approved a budget that eliminated funding for the regional staff training conferences that had been held annually in San Francisco and Washington D.C., AAN Board president Stephen Leon explains in a memo mailed to publishers this week (and available in the Resource Library). In lieu of the conferences, the Board allocated a sum of money to "regional staff training," without specifying dates or locations. The idea was that individual publishers, or small groups of publishers, could submit conference proposals to AAN to apply for "grant" money from the budget. This year's AAN West conference was the first conference organized under the program; in a document that was attached to Leon's memo, the organizers share their "formula for success."

Think of it as Kinda Like AAN East
A new twist this year: The final day of the convention will feature sales training seminars for beginning- and intermediate-level sales staff that will be accessible under a separate, less-expensive registration schedule. The idea is to provide regional training for papers in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions who would have sent sales staff to AAN East, which was canceled this year. We've lined up two highly regarded professional speakers -- Rita Bailey and Dianne Ciotta -- to provide the training. This special program is $125 for AAN members and $200 for non-members (until May 16) and the separate registration includes access to the Bailey and Ciotta sessions, as well as the convention parties on Friday and Saturday. Fully registered convention registrants will also be allowed to attend these special sales-training seminars.

Convention Website Open for Business
This year's AAN Convention heads back to the East Coast --
Philadelphia, to be exact. The Declaration of IndependAANts, the
association's 31st annual convention, will be hosted by the
Philadelphia City Paper from June 5-7 at the Pennsylvania Convention
Center. As always, AAN has lined up a mix of special speakers,
brass-tacks programming, and plenty of food, drink and revelry. New
Yorker reporter and Pulitzer Prize winner Seymour Hersh (pictured) is the
featured speaker at Friday's First Amendment Lunch, while OC Weekly
staffer and "Ask a Mexican!" columnist Gustavo Arellano will host
Saturday's AltWeekly Awards Lunch. The convention website -- where
you'll find registration information, event schedules, and programming
details -- is now live and accepting registrations. Be sure to register
before May 2 to get discounted rates.

Santa Barbara Independent Wins AAN CAN Contest
Doug Elder and Robby Robbins have been named the winners of the AAN CAN European Dream Trip contest, which ended on Friday. As the sales rep and sales manager who generated the most new business between Oct. 11, 2007 and March 21, they will each be awarded a 10-day trip for two that includes round-trip airfare and accommodations for three nights each in London, Paris and Rome. Elder and Robbins ended up with a final tally of $19,928, placing well ahead of the runner-up, John DeMartino of the Independent Weekly, who finished with $2,888.

AAN Hires New Director of Sales and Marketing
Rick Mundy has joined the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies as director of sales and marketing. He has a more than a decade of experience in newspapers, in sales, marketing, and publishing at various community newspapers, and also as federation manager at the Newspaper Association of America. Mundy's immediate focus will be on revitalizing the AAN CAN classified program. His first day on staff was March 4.

AAN Hires a New Sales Assistant
Stephanie Roswell has joined the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies as the new sales assistant. Roswell, who started work at AAN on Jan. 28, will assist with the AAN CAN program and handle other administrative tasks as well.

Medill Survives Wave of AltWeekly Awards Entries
In its first year administering AAN's editorial contest, Northwestern University's journalism school processed 1,404 entries, a slight decline from last year's total of 1,490. The decline is probably due to rule changes that resulted in the elimination of two categories and a decrease in the number of entries allowed in other categories. Member participation continues to hover around the 100-mark, with 97 newspapers and seven independent cartoonists submitting work. Finalists will be announced on AAN.org in May.

Conference Attendance Exceeds Expectations
Registration totals for AAN West and the Web Publishing Conference, which will be held next week in San Francisco, have far surpassed AAN projections. At 275 registrants, attendance at AAN West is already 50 percent higher than last year and the most it's been since 2003. And the Web Publishing Conference current total of 170 registrants is more than 40 percent above the final numbers from October 2006, the date of the first AAN web conference in San Francisco. There's still room for more if you would like to register. Although our room block at the Hotel Kabuki is already filled, they have a limited number of rooms available at prices that exceed the AAN group rate. Another option: The Kabuki has a sister property about two blocks away, Hotel Tomo, with lower online rates.

AltWeekly Award Deadline Approaches
Members have just over a week to enter the 2008 contest. Entries must be registered through the contest website by midnight EST on Fri., Jan. 25. Two Veteran Staffers to Leave AAN
AAN director of sales and marketing Roxanne Cooper and her assistant,
Tiffany Kildale, resigned last week after accepting new positions with
different employers. Cooper will be leaving AAN in February to take over as
associate publisher of the Philadelphia City Paper, and Kildale departs next
month to assume the position of meeting coordinator at the Chemical
Producers & Distributors Association in Washington, D.C.

Medill to Administer AltWeekly Awards Contest
AAN's Editorial Committee will continue to work with staff to select the categories each year and supervise the contest, while Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism will take over the day-to-day activities. AAN decided to look into having a third-party administrator after receiving record numbers of participating members and entries since the contest went online three years ago. Medill was a great fit, since the school already had a standing relationship with AAN. "Ultimately, I want people to think of AAN and Medill the way they think of Columbia and the Pulitzers or Harvard and the Nieman fellowship," says Medill professor Charles Whitaker, who will work with AAN editorial projects manager Heather Kuldell on the 2008 Awards to ensure a smooth transition.

AAN Distributes White Paper on Public Affairs Advertising
Alternative newsweeklies have always struggled to attract their fair share of political, public affairs and nonprofit advertising. Earlier this year, AAN commissioned a study by Fenton Communications -- the Washington, D.C.-based communications firm that represents MoveOn.org, Save Darfur, Rock the Vote, People for the American Way, and a host of other progressive organizations -- to find out why. The results of their research were mailed today to AAN publishers. While Fenton doesn't sugarcoat the problems alt-weeklies face in the political advertising space, they do offer several ideas about how we can improve our position. In the coming months, AAN will work on a number of action items contained in the report.

AAN Encourages Members to Unmask Anonymous Senator
An unknown Republican senator has placed a secret hold on the Open Government Act, a bill supported by AAN that would improve the Freedom of Information Act. Although the OGA has already passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 308-117 and was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee, this anonymous supporter of government secrecy is preventing the bill from reaching the Senate floor for a vote. AAN strongly encourages its members to join the Society of Professional Journalist's crowdsourcing effort to unmask the secretive senator.

New Member Directories Shipped
Five copies of the latest version were mailed to AAN publishers this week. Although the directory is no longer designed as a marketing tool, the association produces a new one every two years as a convenience for AAN members. The small, spiral-bound book includes contact information for member companies and their senior staff.

Gambit Weekly Columnist and Family on Family Feud
Ronnie Virgets and his loved ones stomped the competition and will return for tomorrow's episode of the TV game show, according to Michael Tisserand, Virget's ex-editor at Gambit. "The whole family wore crawfish beads and the host (John O'Hurley) announced that they were from New Orleans, 'America's most resilient city,'" reports Tisserand, who also touts Virgets latest book, "Lost Bread," which includes his account of being rescued from the top of his house after Katrina. "I think that account is the best descriptive writing about Katrina that's been published anywhere," says Tisserand.
