'Traitor': Ideological Ambiguitiesnew
This Don Cheadle movie is a rare Hollywood creature: an action picture with ambiguity, a blockbuster with more questions than answers, a shoot-’em-up thriller with a sense of moral and geopolitical ambivalence.

Liz Phair Paddles Back to Guyvillenew
Phair has unshelved the songs that made her who she is, directed a rough documentary revisiting the dude-heavy Chicago scene that chewed her out while eating her up, and set out to play Guyville in its entirety at select dates around the country.

Opening-Night Jitters at the DNCnew
The Democratic National Convention started off with a strange vibe that might be summed up in one word: restraint. Much is being pent-up here; emotions are being held in check.

What McCain Needs to Do at the RNC to Gain Groundnew

Overriding everything for McCain is the necessity to make his message in the upcoming week a far more positive one than it has been to this juncture. Without a compelling positive vision of change on domestic issues, the Republicans can't win.

'Transsiberian' Uses its Atmosphere to Great Effectnew
The film uses expert sleight-of-hand to juggle drugs, murder and various shades of villainy at the exact right times. Even if you've seen lots of movies of this type and can figure out exactly what's going to happen, Anderson takes great pleasure in the pure form and execution of it.

'Traitor' is a Popcorn Thriller in Political-Drama Clothingnew
Nachmanoff, working from an idea by Steve Martin (yes, that Steve Martin), does try to address some serious questions about the religious motivations behind terrorist acts, but in the end he's more concerned with gotcha moments than with intellectual discourse. That's not necessarily a bad thing.
