Editor-in-chief & CEO:
Jackson Free Press
Donna Ladd is a native
Mississippian who graduated
from Mississippi State, then left
the state for 18 years. While she
was gone, she worked as a club
DJ in five states, published her
own crappy-but-determined little
newspaper in Manhattan's East
Village, helped start the Colorado
Springs Independent as its first
editor, wrote for the Village Voice
about politics and technology,
and attended the mid-career
program at the Columbia
Graduate School of Journalism.
Her homing device went off when
she turned 40 and, much to her
surprise, she hightailed it back to
Mississippi in 2001, with her
partner Todd Stauffer (a Texan
she met in Colorado Springs) in
tow. Back in Mississippi, she
decided to do what she had
sworn on a stack of gender-
inspecific Bibles that she'd never
do again, much less in her native
Bible Belt: help start a newspaper.
The Jackson Free Press was born
on what would have been her
mama's 78th birthday, and
although life has certainly been
more relaxed and carefree, it has
never been better. (Photo by Kate Medley)
