Three Alt-Weeklies Among Bert Greene Award Finalistsnew
The International Association of Culinary Professionals has announced the finalists for this year's Bert Greene Awards, which honor "one of the most sophisticated and dynamic genres in contemporary journalism" -- food writing. This year, both the Houston Press and SF Weekly are finalists in the brand-new Blog category, and the Village Voice's Sarah Digregorio is a finalist in the Culinary Writing without Recipes category for her February 2009 piece on foie gras. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Portland on April 22.

President Obama Quotes Village Voice Headlinenew
"Scott Brown Wins Mass. Race, Giving GOP 41-59 Majority in the Senate." This Voice headline on the day after Brown won the Senate seat vacated by the late Ted Kennedy caught the eyes of many observers at the time, and now the president himself has referenced it. "There was apparently a headline after the Massachusetts election," Obama said in remarks to Senate Democrats, according to Talking Points Memo. "The Village Voice announced that Republicans win a 41-59 majority. It's worth thinking about. We still have to lead."

Alt-Weeklies Pick Up Some Wins at the 2009 'Sexies' Awardsnew
The Sex-Positive Journalism Awards have announced the winners of the 2009 Sexies, the annual awards that go to stories that "improve the quality of dialogue around sex and create a more well-informed reading public." Seven Days' Judith Levine took home a first-place win in the Opinion category, where she also tied for second place with a Village Voice piece by Tristan Taormino. Amanda Hess of Washington City Paper picked up a third-place win in the Columns category for "The Sexist," while in the News/Features (Alt-Weeklies, Monthlies) category the Alibi's Marisa Demarco placed third and Rich Kane (OC Weekly) and Michael J. Mooney (New Times Broward-Palm Beach) both were named runners-up.

Michael Tomasky: Village Voice Scores 'Headline of the Day'new
The Voice's blog post on the result of yesterday's special election for the Massachusetts Senate seat vacated by Ted Kennedy -- titled "Scott Brown Wins Mass. Race, Giving GOP 41-59 Majority in the Senate" -- was singled out by The Guardian's Michael Tomasky as the headline of the day. "Someone put their witty cap on today over there at the Village Voice," he writes.

Mark Gates, Who Helped Launch 'Voice Literary Supplement,' Diesnew
Mark Gates, a former ad sales representative at the Village Voice, died earlier this month of lung cancer. He was 57. After working for a few years doing general sales at the Voice, Gates' boss suggested he start cold-calling publishers to sell book ads, but he was met with hesitation by the book publishers. As Gates told Publishers Weekly in 2006, he then came up with the idea of doing a section of book reviews once a month, and the Voice Literary Supplement was born, with the first issue coming out in October 1981.

Brooklyn Illustrator Turns Classified Ads into Artnew
Sophie Blackall uses "Missed Connections" ads from Craigslist and the Village Voice as source material for her "playful prints using Chinese ink and watercolor," the New York Times reports. "I lost about two hours of my life reading them and thought this is just an extraordinary mine of material, ranging from the lyrical, poetic to unintentionally hilarious," she says of the ads. "Many of them threw out ideas for images to me right away." Blackall, who compiled the work on a blog earlier this year and has opened an Etsy shop, says she's also negotiating a book deal for the illustrations.

Robert Newman Goes a Little Deeper into Village Voice Cover Archivenew
Last week, we told you about the collection of Village Voice covers posted in Facebook galleries by Robert Newman Design. Over the weekend, he added some even older covers from the 70s and 80s, featuring the work of design luminaries like Milton Glaser, George Delmerico and Michael Grossman. The New York Times' David Carr says "it's a walk down memory lane for people who otherwise might have some trouble remembering those good old days."

Robert Newman Design Showcases Years of Village Voice Covers
In a three-part Facebook photo album series, Robert Newman Design has posted a whole bunch of Voice covers and inside design pieces dating back to when Newman himself was at the paper in the early 90s. In addition to Newman, the photosets also feature design work from Florian Bachleda, Jennifer Gilman, Ted Keller and IvyLise Simones, as well as illustration work from a number of artists. Tom Tomorrow is Back in The Village Voicenew
Tom Tomorrow's "This Modern World" returns to the Village Voice this week after a seven month absence. Tomorrow's comic was cut from all Village Voice Media papers -- along with all syndicated comics -- back in January. The strip is only returning to the Voice for now, but that may change in the coming months. "Altweekly cartooning overall has kind of been on the ropes for the past year or two, and any editor who takes a stand in support of the art form deserves profound thanks," Tom Tomorrow writes on his blog. "This is a first step, but it's a huge one in the right direction -- for me personally, of course, but with any luck, for other cartoonists as well."

Village Voice Classified Ad Sets Film Plot in Motion
We missed the news of the feature film WTC View when it was released in 2005, but this month Logo is airing the movie, which uses a Voice classified ad as plot springboard, so we figured we'd let you know about it. "[The] film is about a young gay man who places an ad in the Village Voice for a roommate the night before September 11," according to the Los Angeles Times' synopsis. "In the coming weeks, he desperately interviews potential roomies to share his pad that has -- you guessed it -- a WTC view."

Complete Village Voice Archives Now Onlinenew
The first issue of the Voice was published on Oct. 26, 1955. Now we all can read that issue and every one that followed, courtesy of Google. The archives are hosted by the Internet juggernaut as part of the company's effort to digitize historical newspaper archives. "Get mad at our coverage of ancient history as well as of current events!" enthuses the Voice.

Columbia J-School Grads Remain 'Excited and Hopeful'new
As part of the Village Voice's education supplement, the alt-weekly talks to several 2009 graduates from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism about what it feels like to enter an industry that many are proclaiming to be near death. Surprisingly, they remain upbeat about the future and feel prepared to take part in the rebirth of the news industry. "If you look at it differently, it's an exciting time in journalism," one recent grad says. "People are trying to come up with solutions to find out what the future is going to be."

Sarah Palin's Attorney Takes a Swing at the Village Voicenew
Thomas Van Flein issued a four-page letter on Saturday denying there was a brewing scandal behind Palin's decision to resign her gubernatorial office a day earlier. What's more, the statement put the media on notice that the Palin team would file defamation lawsuits against media outlets that repeated allegations about a possible scandal centered around a building contractor with close ties to the Palins. In a footnote, Van Flein points out these "insinuations" were published in the "left wing Village Voice" in an October 2008 story by Wayne Barrett. The piece examined links between Palin and several contractors who worked on a sports complex as part of a deeper look at Palin's previous record. "Van Flein's statement -- which derides 'modern journalism' for 'abhorring' due diligence and factchecking -- is actually longer than the section of the Voice story that examined the connections around the complex," Barrett writes, "but he does not challenge a single fact actually presented in our story."
