Judges' Comments on Award Winners Are Available

Judges' critiques of the 2005 AltWeekly Awards winners can now be downloaded for review. The same comments will appear in AAN Press's forthcoming book, Best AltWeekly Writing and Design 2005. Individual newspapers can also obtain summaries of remarks on all of their entries.

An Informal Survey of Alt-Weekly Sponsored Events

Willamette Week's "Candidates Gone Wild!" (pictured) offers an interesting twist on the traditional newspaper-sponsored political debate. It also helps to promote the paper as a "source for uncensored, pull-no-punches coverage of politics and elective office," says editor Mark Zusman. His paper is just one of many in AAN that regularly host local events that raise their profile, define their brand and, perhaps, increase ad revenue and readership.

Advertising Handouts and Presentations Available in AAN Library
A number of the handouts and presentations from both the classified and retail tracks from last week’s AAN Convention have been added to the AAN Library. Additional handouts, as well as the individual entries from “Marketing, Branding & Promotion: AAN Best Practices” and “Show Me the Money” will be added to the Library later this week.
The Library also features resources from prior conferences and conventions, white papers on various sales and sales management topics, links to articles, customizable “Influentials” one sheets and other resources. If you’d like to share other tools from your paper (sales training manuals, collateral pieces, etc.), please contact Roxanne Cooper at rcooper@aan.org.

Three More Weeklies Admitted to AAN

Las Vegas Weekly (cover pictured above), Bellingham Weekly of Bellingham, Wash., and Style Weekly of Richmond, Va., were voted in as members of the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies at the organization's annual meeting on June 18. The Las Vegas and Richmond papers were the first two daily-owned alt-weeklies ever admitted to AAN.
