Three More Weeklies Admitted to AAN

Las Vegas Weekly (cover pictured above), Bellingham Weekly of Bellingham, Wash., and Style Weekly of Richmond, Va., were voted in as members of the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies at the organization's annual meeting on June 18. The Las Vegas and Richmond papers were the first two daily-owned alt-weeklies ever admitted to AAN. (FULL STORY)

Washington City Paper Starts Using Hawkersnew

With retail outlets down and competition up, the Capital's alt-weekly has turned to street hawkers to help it get the paper into readers' hands, reports the Washington Post. While the District's free commuter dailies employ hawkers during morning rush hours, the City Paper crew hit the streets Thursday afternoon, to target readers leaving work during "happy hour," says publisher Amy Austin.

Gannett Creates Free-Paper Distribution Company in Greenville

TDN was launched last year by the local Gannett daily, The Greenville News, and now controls about 400 retail locations in the area. Many of those retailers had previously distributed now-defunct AAN member MetroBeat for free, but when TDN took over, MetroBeat was forced out, making way for Gannett's faux-alt Link, and several other free publications. Alt-weeklies across the country are increasingly facing similar exclusive rack programs operated by large companies like Trader and DistribuTech. Retail Crackdowns, News Box Limitations Hinder Reader Circulationnew

The Chicago Reader's 2004 circulation of 119,486 was down from 129,437 in 2003, reports Chicago Business. According to the report, Reader executives attribute the dip to chain retailers limiting or removing papers from their stores in an attempt to reduce clutter, and to new restrictions on the size of sidewalk news boxes.
