Survey: Independent Retailers Outperformed Chains Over Holidays
A survey of 1,142 independent retailers by the Institute for Local Self-Reliance found that holiday sales among the indies declined by an average of five percent in 2008, far less than the loss of holiday business suffered by chain stores. The survey also found that independent retailers in cities with active "Buy Local" campaigns, such as the organized efforts that more than 70 AAN members took part in this year, reported much stronger holiday sales than indies in non-"Buy Local" cities.

Many of the essays in the book, which covers the region's identity, first ran as columns in the Weekly. The Stranger and Ace Hotel Launch 'Trainsetters' Programnew

In collaboration with Travel Portland and Amtrak Cascades, Ace Hotel and
The Stranger have launched Trainsetters -- a program that encourages
train travel from Seattle to Portland and supports Portland's independent
shops this holiday season. The program is aimed at an emerging travel market: younger travelers who are sick of the hassle and high costs of driving
and air travel, and who prefer the train's practical and aesthetic benefits. Trainsetters will be promoted via design collaborations between The Stranger and Ace Hotel, including postcards, posters and custom coffee sleeves on the train, ads in The Stranger, and also on the web at www.trainsetters.com.

Ensure Openness, Media Groups Tell Obama Administration
Today the Sunshine in Government Initiative (SGI) is urging the administration of President-elect Barack Obama to take four immediate, concrete steps to strengthen open government. The coalition of media organizations that includes AAN is pressing the administration to restore the presumption of disclosure across the executive branch; create an independent, online FOIA ombudsman; ban agencies from proposing or endorsing unnecessary statutory exemptions from disclosure; and speak on the record in all policy statements and current news about public matters. "These actions would show President-elect Obama intends to fulfill his pledge to restore open government in Washington," SGI coordinator Rick Blum says in a release.
