Alexandria Rocha's story about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students won a 2006 John Swett Award for Media Excellence. The awards, given by the California Teachers Association, recognize "excellence in covering public education."

East Bay Express Wins 17 Regional Journalism Awardsnew
In the East Bay Press Club's 2006 Excellence in Print Journalism Contest, the Express finished first in nine categories: sports feature, business feature, technology feature, general news, columnist, long feature, lifestyle feature, criticism or reviewing, and profile. According to a press release, the awards are "somewhat unique in that all print media organizations are judged against each other -- there are no separate categories for circulation or for magazines." Winners were announced Friday evening at a banquet in Oakland.

California Alt-Weeklies Win a Slew of 'Better Newspapers' Awardsnew
AAN members won 15 first-place awards in the California Association of Newspaper Publishers' annual contest, led by Palo Alto Weekly, which took home five firsts. Chico News & Review placed first in in three categories; Pacific Sun won two; and Metro Santa Cruz, North Coast Journal, Sacramento News & Review, San Francisco Bay Guardian, and the Santa Barbara Independent each finished in first in one category. The awards were presented in a ceremony Saturday evening.

Bay Guardian Gets Hat Tip from Editor & Publishernew
In its annual list of 10 newspapers that "do it right," E&P has singled out the San Francisco Bay Guardian as "the archetype of the politically involved, locally focused alternative newspaper that's an alert and occasionally rabid watchdog." Editor/publisher Bruce Brugmann tells E&P that he worries that he and his wife and Bay Guardian co-founder Jean Dibble "are almost anachronisms" in today's media environment, with their brand of crusading alt-journalism. "Every good newspaper man ought to be controversial," Brugmann says.

In the 2007 Ohio Excellence in Journalism Awards, Cleveland's Scene won in the Best Non-Daily Newspaper: Alternatives category, with Cincinnati CityBeat coming in second. Other first place finishes: Cleveland Free Times' Michael Gill in Essays; The Other Paper's Karen E. Graves in Reviews/Criticism; and
the Scene's Pete Kotz in Column Writing. The awards, sponsored by the Press Club of Cleveland, were presented at a reception on Friday.

In the annual Society of Professional Journalists Utah Headliners Awards, reporter Ted McDonough took first in two categories: Best Newspaper Reporter and Government Reporting. Other first place finishes for the Weekly: Katherine Biele in Consumer Reporting; Bill Frost in Headline Writing; Ben Fulton in Personality Profile; and Shane Johnson in Criminal Justice Reporting. Winners were announced last Friday night.

Alt-Weeklies Clean Up at Southern California Journalism Awardsnew
Los Angeles CityBeat's Michael Collins won Print Journalist of the Year, while L.A. Weekly took two similar honors: Nikke Finke was named Entertainment Journalist of the Year and John Curry was named Designer of the Year. The Weekly's Jonathan Gold added to his growing trophy rack with a first-place win in the Entertainment Reviews/Criticism/Column category for his "Counter Intelligence" food reviews, while his colleague Libby Molyneaux won first in the Headline category. CityBeat's Anthony Miller placed first in the Entertainment Feature category, OC Weekly's Scott Moxley took home first in the Investigative Series category for "The New Crips," and Advice Goddess Amy Alkon won a first-place award for Headlines. L.A. Weekly also won a first-place award for Special Section, with "Who We Are: LA People 2006." OC Weekly's Gustavo Arellano received the

The Independent Weekly Wins Casey Medalnew
The North Carolina alt-weekly took home a first place prize in the nondaily category for Mosi Secret's story of one man's struggles to overcome addictions to find meaningful, legal work through a Durham jobs program. The paper will receive a Casey Medal and $1,000 at a ceremony this October. AAN members swept this category, with Seattle Weekly's Nina Shapiro finishing second, and Phoenix New Times' Sarah Fenske receiving an honorable mention.

The Coast Writer Wins Canadian Journalism Awardnew
Megan Wennberg was named winner of the Greg Clark Award by the Canadian Journalism Foundation on Wednesday night. The award is "designed to offer working journalists a chance to gain insight and meet key decision-makers on their beats." Wennberg will spend some time with newsmakers in Iqaluit, Nunavut, where "she will gain insight into understanding the daily realities in Canada's north and be better equipped to tell stories" about that community.
