Hey, That's Not an Alt-Weekly!

According to AAN executive director Richard Karpel, reporters often mistakenly apply the term "alternative newspaper" to the wrong publications. So in an effort to "make some small contribution to human understanding and the brand equity of our member papers," he decided to note every time he sees the term used incorrectly. In this first edition of "Hey, That's Not an Alt-Weekly!" -- an irregular series devoted to the correct use of the term "alternative newspaper" and all its variants -- Karpel explains what an alternative newspaper is and why The Sun News in Santa Fe, N.M., doesn't qualify. Welcome to the New AAN Web Site

For years now, AAN.org has had interesting features and content, but a great deal of it was hidden behind an opaque interface. The redesign unveils these formerly hidden features; starting today, you should be able to figure out how to use them without an instruction manual. There's still work to do, but the redesigned site clearly is simpler, requires less scrolling, and offers faster access to important content. Also new: AAN Wire and the AAN Library. (FULL STORY)

AAN: Shaw, LA Times Got It Wrong

In a letter to the Los Angeles Times responding to a column written by media critic David Shaw, AAN Executive Director Richard Karpel says Shaw's characterization of the alternative newsweekly business "is both inaccurate and misleading." Countering Shaw's assertions, Karpel claims AAN papers "are as unfettered as they ever were and far more independent than their competitors in the mainstream press." (FULL STORY)
