Believing in Billynew
Billy the Kid, a disarmingly funny and genuinely poignant low-budget documentary, sports old-fashioned comedic charm and the psychological weight of a Freudian wet dream.

'The Golden Compass': Aspiring Fantasy Franchisenew
Best line: "I am an armored bear. War is the sea I swim in and the air I breathe," proclaims Iorek, voiced with towering gruffness by McKellan (who was cast against the wishes of director Chris Weitz).

Of Hollywood, Bruce Lee, and MC Hammernew
Far be it from me to declare that an entire genre of film is dead, but shit, the reels that make up Finishing the Game would probably be just as useful as a tombstone on mockumentary's grave.

God is Deadnew
Just kidding. He's fine. But in a predictably spineless move, all direct references to religion have been dropped from The Golden Compass.

'Atonement': Error-Borne Illnessnew
Vanessa Redgrave's appearance reawakens the film, both because of the actress' exquisite ability with subtle emotion and a plot turn that reframes much of what you've just watched. For both the character and the filmmakers, atonement is achieved.

'Atonement' is More Than a Mere Novel-tynew
The film is true enough to McEwan's story and is made solidly enough to stand on its own merits, but lacks the book's brilliant meta-story.

Only a Director's Mother Could Love 'Mama's Boy'new
It's easy to imagine that screenwriter Hank Nelken conceived Mama's Boy while reading a magazine article reporting on the full-nest syndrome -- the increasing tendency for grownup children to continue residing with their parents. It is too depressing to contemplate the possibility that anyone had artistic ambitions for this irksome fluff.
