Castrating Alfienew

The original is a classic, and for good reason. Michael Caine’s seduction artist was a heel and a creep -- one who finds no redemption in the end. Conversely, there is no darkness in this version that a few sessions with a decent therapist and the right woman couldn't fix.

Candy Cainenew

Writer-director Charles Shyer's Alfie is less a remake of the 1966 film that made Michael Caine a star than it is a retooling that softens the horrific blows struck by the original.

The Guy's Chick Flicknew

This Alfie feels like Bridget Jones with a sex change or "Sex and the City" from the guy's perspective. According to chick flick formula, Alfie's Englishman chauffeur in New York learns various life lessons as he progresses from a playa seducing every woman in sight to a vulnerable charmer who's been schooled and chastened by all the girls he's loved before.
