Digital Video Has Become as Unreliable a Narrator as Celluloidnew
Hollywood has finally started to respond to the success of YouTube and other online video sites. Cloverfield, Redacted, and Diary of the Dead purported to be "found" videos, made by someone who didn't plan for their footage to wind up in a movie theater. But video looks too good to be "real."

'Cloverfield' Exploits National Tragedynew
The game in Cloverfield is to exploit media-memory of 9/11 and encourage moviegoers who were probably in grade school, and not quite senescent at the time, to pretend to relive that terror -- while feeling safely nostalgic.

Hollywood Product: 'Cloverfield'new
The bottom line: Cloverfield lives up to six months of online hype. Once the bad stuff starts going down, no one in the theater takes a breath for an hour. It even offers a fairly touching story of callow New Yorkers who find love and meaning in the teeth of disaster, amid all the holy-crap monster spectacle.

'Cloverfield''s 9/11 Infelicitiesnew
Last weekend's $46-million top-grosser essentially says that its characters and, by extension, its paying audience, deserves to be killed: New Yorkers, Americans, Abrams' target demographic. I never thought I would see a movie made in the United States that was so gung-ho about 9/11.
