Jonathan Larson's Legacy Lives Onnew

Rent builds to a touching funeral and a superb reprise of two of the best songs, but rather than go out on a strong note, the film retains the musical's melodramatic final portion, including a ridiculous death scene that, on a movie screen, feels like having a billboard yell at you for five minutes.

Unsure Shotnew

A new film depicts how a kid became a killer, almost, during the frustrating first Gulf War. Its main achievement is to get us inside Anthony Swofford's "empty vessel," the mind of a Marine, a "jarhead," as it is first formed by hardship, then filled with horror.

The plot realistically mimics a teenager's adriftness and tendency toward hairpin-turn mood shifts as it bounds from the wonderfully affecting to the decidedly idiosyncratic to the occasionally absurd.
