Punk & Metal Bands Go Low Fidelitynew
The ongoing retro trend of punk and metal labels releasing cassettes is the result of an influx of music fans who appreciate a more lo-fi approach and who favor analog’s warm sound over digital’s crispness.

Can a City Really Tell You When and Where You Can or Can't Play Music?new
As it turns out, a license for busking in Santa Fe costs $35 per calendar year. The license comes with a host of guidelines that include when buskers can play, where they can play and how long they can play there; it also specifies that there can be no amplification. All this raises somewhat existential questions.

Whose House?: Venues Go Off the Gridnew
House shows are usually pretty amazing experiences. Perhaps it’s because the bands that play them could care less about money and would much rather melt faces and blow minds.

Mount Eerie's Phil Elverum Opens Up Offstagenew
Phil Elverum is a unique kind of shy. The artist, who began his musical project as The Microphones and has since switched to the moniker Mount Eerie, lets his emotions fly when he writes and performs songs, yet keeps his distance from the audience by closing his eyes through most of the set and singing as if he were in the room completely alone.

Apple Miner Colony Induces Mellow Mayhemnew
The group is a fresco, a mixed and matched selection of strings, brass, electric and acoustic instruments sweeping with ruddy choruses, that hold the audience's collective attention above the spectacle of witnessing such a large band at play. The live show and the band's recently released album confirms that relevant and soulful music is alive and well in Santa Fe.

Matmos Has Intellectualized its Art to Perfectionnew
What makes Supreme Balloon interesting is that it doesn't sound like a bunch of synths being played by two guys. It sounds like a pirate radio broadcast from a hipster alien art collective, or Sigur Ros shot into the future and brought back to the present to teach us about technology.

'Attack and Release' Misses the Marknew
The album, which originated as a project for Ike Turner, is not awash with needless complexity, but the additional instrumentation is ancillary and never quite a part of the band’s sonic range.

Grammar-Dropping Doesn't Make a Band Smartnew
In the last few years the phrase "literate indie rock" has been thrown around willy-nilly to describe bands that make some sort of "smart" reference in their music. The term could easily be applied to the online-hype-driven Vampire Weekend.

'Destruction' is Low on Vision, High on Power & Convictionnew
A band that sells itself as the "last rock 'n' roll band" is probably one of two things: deluded or possibly right. The latter seems to be the case with Marah.
