Amy Winehouse, R.I.P.new

Many in the online peanut gallery are saying that the death of Amy Winehouse was "inevitable"—that the gamut of her gossip-page-worthy problems was going to result in sadness no matter what. It is hard, as someone who has watched the music news cycle up close for the past few years, to think that she hadn't already had enough tragedy befall her, to wonder if this particular closing chapter wasn't preventable somehow by not rushing her back to the stage when she clearly wasn't ready, or if the point-and-gawk cycle was just too powerful.

Fat Beats closed its New York branch on Saturday, Sept. 4th. For fans and underground artists, the demise of the store that dubbed itself "the last stop for hip-hop" feels like the loss of the music's spiritual home.

Unearthing a Trove of Classic NYC Salsa and Latin Soulnew
West Side Latino Records' mid-'60s-and-beyond heyday, encompassing classic salsa, boogaloo, and hard Latin funk, is now obscure to all but the most devoted followers—meaning it's exactly the kind of music Brooklyn-based Wax Poetics was created to document.
