Rightbloggers Denounce the Wealthy, Treasonous Schoolteachers of Wisconsinnew

The effort by Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker and the Republican-led state legislature to deprive the state's teachers of collective bargaining rights was catnip to rightbloggers last week. This is because it involves two of their traditional objects of hatred: Unions and public education.

Should Sportswriters be Allowed to Gamble on Sports?new

Financial reporters aren't allowed to buy stock in companies they cover. Political reporters often go so far as to not vote in order to keep their claims of objectivity legitimate. But many sports reporters -- gatekeepers of all the juicy tidbits that could sway public opinion on a game, either in Vegas or with a local bookmaker -- think nothing of placing a wager themselves.

Who is the Media Person of the Year?new

An entire media panel opted to stay seated in a room in a building that may or may not have been on fire instead of getting up to leave. This media discussion going up in flames is a completely and utterly apt metaphor for something about the content and state of these kinds of discussions.

21st Century Situationists

Framed inaccurately by the press, The Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear is best understood as a contemporary extension of the French Situationist movement of the ’60s, a mass inversion of rhetorical logic, meant to break the spectator’s passivity toward the spectacle and turn the obscuring force of mass media back on itself. Using pop cultural references and superficial Internet memes like the double-rainbow guy and “Hide ya kids, hide ya wife...” in the context of a once-powerful political forum was a Dadaist attempt to wipe the slate clean, to rise above the fruitless tit-for-tat schoolyard shouting match to which our political discourse has been reduced by the 24-hour news cycle and corporate spin-doctoring.
