Rene Spencer Saller: Music Criticism Without the Testosterone

Rene Spencer Saller began writing music reviews for a fanzine when she was in her mid teens and has since made her way in a field that seems to be dominated by "white guys." She can admire a band and still take it to task for its misogyny. Her award-winning column, Sound Patrol, appears in Illinois Times. This is the 26th in a "How I Got That Story" series highlighting the AltWeekly Awards' first-place winners.

Los Angeles Ponders the Future of L.A. Weeklynew

Los Angeles Times staff writer Scott Martelle describes the fears and hopes for L.A. Weekly's role in the New Times-controlled Village Voice Media. He details the turbulent recent history of alt-weeklies in Los Angeles and speaks to several notable Angelenos. Local pol Jackie Goldberg, "a frequent target of New Times LA columnists" during New Times' previous residency in the city, says: "They were not just a gadfly, they were an assault vehicle." Martelle also speaks to a few current L.A. Weekly staff members, including editor Laurie Ochoa, and addresses speculation that Phoenix New Times editor Rick Barrs will replace her. (Barrs says that he hasn't been asked, but adds that he would "have mixed emotions about it.")

Boulder Weekly Columnist Plans Catholic Podcasts
Wayne Laugesen has drawn attention for his inflammatory Boulder Weekly columns (and, once, for smashing some windows). Now, the former Weekly editor hopes to draw listeners. According to a feature in Longmont, Colorado's Daily Times-Call, Laugesen "is building a sound studio in his Boulder County home at a cost of $10,000 to $15,000," in the hopes of launching money-making Catholic podcasts. Specifically, Laugesen is planning a talk show on which he'll debate "liberal journalist Pamela White"--the current editor of Boulder Weekly.

Kent Williams: Looking at Art's Provocative Side

With his award-winning arts criticism in Madison's Isthmus, Kent Williams makes the case for the local critic: someone who will see The Passion of the Christ the way the community sees it, who will marvel at the complexity of the pipe organ in the local symphony hall, and who will notice the naked sculpture at the local museum that people have walked past all these years without ever really understanding her. This is the 24th in a "How I Got That Story" series highlighting the AltWeekly Awards' first-place winners.

Louisville Magazine Compares LEO and Gannett-Owned Weekly

The December issue contains a lengthy feature on the Louisville Eccentric Observer and its competitor for advertising dollars, Velocity. Velocity is a weekly arts & entertainment tabloid that was spun off from Gannett's local daily, the Courier-Journal. The paper's editor, Jim Lenehan, is confident his faux-alt will attract young readers: "We did a lot of focus groups that told us that this was what they really wanted to see -- that this was the kind of thing they would pick up week after week." (The article is not available on Louisville Magazine's Web site, but the publication kindly allowed us to post a PDF here.)

Pulitzer Board Changes Rules, Cites Willamette Week's Winning Entry as Factor
Amendments to the Pulitzer rules announced Wednesday will allow newspapers to submit online-only material for consideration in all 14 journalism categories. In a Washington Post article, Pulitzer administrator Sig Gissler pointed to last year's prize-winning entry from Willamette Week in the investigative reporting category as a factor in the board's decision to make the changes. The old rules forbid Willamette Week from submitting the story that was published on its Web site the day before its award-winning article appeared in print.
