Three AAN Members Take Home Press Club of Dallas Awardsnew
The Dallas Observer, Fort Worth Weekly, and Houston Press were all honored when the Press Club's announced its 50th annual Katie Awards Saturday night. The Press won a total of three awards in the large newspapers division, including a first-place win for Column. The Observer, which also competed in the large newspapers division, won one award. In the small and medium newspapers division, the Weekly took home a total of four awards, three of which were first-place finishes -- in Business reporting, Investigative Series or Story, and Specialty Reporting.

East Bay Express Writer Wins National Science Journalism Awardnew
Kara Platoni has won first place honors in the "small newspapers" category in this year's American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science Journalism Awards for stories in the Express about efforts of local scientists to determine whether there is life elsewhere in the cosmos. Platoni "did a marvelous job of bringing the faraway questions surrounding astrobiology down to Earth and particularly important to the readers in her region," judge Andrew Revkin of the New York Times says. She will receive $3,000 and a plaque at the 2009 AAAS Annual Meeting in February.

Correction: Another AAN Member Was Honored at California Press Awards
AAN News has been informed that we missed the fact that the Santa Barbara Independent won several California Newspaper Publishers Association awards when we reported on the awards last week. Indy publisher Randy Campbell notes that the press association for some reason omitted the "Santa Barbara" from the paper's name and simply called it The Independent. The alt-weekly won five awards this year, including first-place finishes in Feature Photo and Investigative/Enterprise

California Alt-Weeklies Take Home Dozens of State Awardsnew
The California Newspaper Publishers Association announced the winners of its annual Better Newspapers Contest on Saturday, and nine AAN members won a total of 38 awards. The Sacramento News & Review won a total of nine awards, five of which were first-place finishes, including a General Excellence win. "The News & Review is a salty and irreverent weekly packed with excellent coverage of news and culture, multiple voices in columns and two pages of letters," the judges wrote. "Its colorful design is inviting and, praises to the sales department, it is packed with ads." In addition, Palo Alto Weekly also won nine total awards; the North Coast Journal won eight; Chico News & Review won four; the San Francisco Bay Guardian won three; Metro Silicon Valley won two; and the Pacific Sun, Pasadena Weekly and SF Weekly each took home one award. CORRECTION: The Santa Barbara Independent also won five awards.

The Providence Phoenix Celebrates 30th Anniversarynew
The paper is running a series of 30 interviews with 30 "local luminaries" to commemorate the occasion. The Phoenix, which started as The New Paper in 1978, was purchased by the Boston Phoenix and renamed in 1988. The Phoenix celebrated with a birthday bash this week, and the Providence Journal has posted some photos from the party.

Monterey County Weekly Writer Wins Environmental Reporting Awardnew
Weekly reporter Kera Abraham took home a third-place award in the Outstanding Small Market Reporting (Print) category in the Society of Environmental Journalists' annual awards for reporting on the environment. "Abraham did an excellent job with two divergent environmental issues," the judges write, "the omnipresent plastic in the aquatic environment, and the destructive environmental practices of marijuana farms on federal park land."

New York Press Film Critic Elected Chairman of NY Critics' Groupnew
Armond White will replace Entertainment Weekly critic Lisa Schwarzbaum as chairman of the New York Film Critics Circle. White, who previously held the same post in 1994, becomes the third African-American to chair NYFCC in the group's 75-year history.

Gambit Weekly Publisher, Editor Receive Anti-Defamation League Awardnew
Gambit publisher Margo DuBos and her husband, political editor Clancy DuBos, will be honored with the Anti-Defamation League's A.I. Botnick "Torch of Liberty Award" at a Dec. 14 dinner in New Orleans. "Under the direction of Margo and Clancy, Gambit has won scores of local, regional and national awards for innovative, incisive and robust journalism," the letter from the ADL reads. "The weekly's editorial positions reflect the ADL's commitment to equal opportunity and opposition to bigotry in any form."

Georgia Straight Writer Wins Fellowshipnew
Travis Lupick was one of five recipients of the Seeing the World through New Eyes fellowship, which was established by the Jack Webster Foundation and the Canadian International Development Agency. He will visit Latin American in early 2009 to experience firsthand reporting from developing countries. The fellowship was open to British Columbia-based journalists 30 years old or younger or in their first five years of journalism, and winners were selected by a jury of professional journalists.

The Nevada Press Association announced the winners of its 2008 "Better Newspaper Contest" Saturday night, and two AAN members fared quite well. The Reno News & Review won a total of 44 awards, including 18 first-place finishes; and Las Vegas CityLife won a total of 32 awards, with 12 of those being first-place wins.
