FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 19, 2006

MADISON, WI -- For 30 years Isthmus, Madison's Weekly Newspaper, has chronicled life in Madison -- civic life, cultural life and countercultural life. Born in 1976, Isthmus will celebrate its anniversary with a party in the Great Hall at the UW-Madison Memorial Union, Friday, April 21, at 8 p.m. The event will feature live music from three outstanding Madison bands: the Clyde Stubblefield Band, the Hometown Sweethearts and the Rob Dz Experience.

The festivities will include 1970s snacks and favors, a disco ball and birthday cake. Come dressed in '70s garb and win prizes! Best of all, the party's free and open to the public.

Vince O'Hern and Fred Milverstedt laid out the first Isthmus in the living room of co-founder Milverstedt's apartment on North Livingston Street; the new publication hit the streets on April 9, 1976. It would place an emphasis on personal voice, local stories and local personalities, an emphasis that continues to this day. In 1977 the paper moved to Hotel Washington; it lived for a time at West Mifflin on the Capitol Square, and currently resides on one of downtown Madison's busiest corners, 101 King Street, where it moved in 1992.

Isthmus publishes the weekly newspaper; it also publishes THEDAILYPAGE.com, as well as many supplement publications, including Annual Manual, Dining, Kids & Parents and Abode. The number of regular readers continues to grow, and now includes over 170,000 educated, opinionated and involved adults. As Isthmus embarks on the next 30 years, Madison's weekly newspaper remains committed to award-winning, cutting-edge journalism that reflects the diversity and interests of our community.

Publisher and founder Vince O'Hern and Associate Publisher Linda Baldwin are available for interviews or comment at 251-5627. Isthmus editors may also be available. Please contact Janine Wachter to schedule.
