It is with great sadness that we report the death of our beloved food editor, Steven Davey, who passed away last week at his home on Queen West.
Steven was a key member of the NOW family for almost 20 years and will be missed by all of us. He will be remembered for his stellar editorial contributions and truly original outlook on food.
Before arriving at NOW, Steven contributed to the Toronto Star, Xtra and Maclean’s as well as General Idea’s FILE magazine, and he was a key player in the nascent Queen West music scene. His two collecti ble 7-inch vinyl EPs with the Dishes – Fashion Plates (1977) and Hot Property (1978) – have since been re-issued on CD as Kitschenette: The Best Of The Dishes (Bullseye, 2002).
“He was fiercely ethical, determined to protect his identity lest a chef give him special treatment. He always paid cash so no one could trace his name or association through a credit card, and often went to restaurants in hilarious disguises. On one review date with me, he dressed as a priest” writes NOW entertainment editor Susan G. Cole in her obituary.
Her full tribute to Steven Davey is available online here
and will also be published in this week’s issue.
