When the Pulitzer Prize winners and finalists were announced today, there was a familiar alt-weekly name on the list:
LA Weekly's Jonathan Gold was one of two finalists for criticism, a category Gold
won in 2007.
While Gold
was cited this year for his "delightful, authoritative restaurant reviews, escorting readers through a city’s diverse food culture," the winner of the criticism category was the
Boston Globe's Sebastian Smee. Gold, however, remains the only food writer to win a Pulitzer for criticism.
Elsewhere on the Pulitzer list this year is
former Boston Phoenix staff writer Ellen Barry, who shared a win for international reporting with her
New York Times colleague Clifford J. Levy for their work on Russia's justice system, and
former Miami New Times staff writer and Texas Observer editor Jake Bernstein, who shared a win for national reporting with his ProPublica colleague Jesse Eisinger for their coverage of the Wall Street collapse.
